How Many Books Do You Have 'on the go?'

I was interested to hear Victoria Coran Mitchell say that she usually has eight or nine books that she is currently reading.

I often have more than one but I don't think I would go above four or five.

How about you?

Always used to be 2 or maybe three when they were actual books but now only use a Kindle and only one at a time. Problem is I hear or read about a book I think i might enjoy, download it to the Kindle and then never know what to read next without checking titles and reading reviews. My new Kindle doesn't seem to differentiate between books that have already been read which makes it difficult - or maybe I just don't know how to get it to tell me this info!. Any help gratefully recv'd.

Have four at the moment. One fiction & one nonfic in the lounge. Another nonfic in the Bookroom, so called as it is a small room just right for the 4 bookcases of books I kept on my last move! Then a fiction in the bedroom something light to read till I feel sleepy. My DDiL reads similar books so we swop ones we think the other may like! So a few piled on the Bookroom floor waiting to be read!

Two at the moment, one at home and one in our caravan

I have three different novels I am reading at the moment, one history book connected to a lecture I am preparing, source documents for same in Latin, both to check facts and to translate, plus bible and prayer book for devotional purposes.

I read a lot of books, but one at a time.

It surprises me that people read more than one book at a time. I like to really get into the book I’m reading and I don’t think that would happen if I tried to read more than one.

I agree. It surprises me too. I completely immerse myself in the book I am reading and can be a bit forgetful and easily confused if I don’t focus.
Some people must have a whole lot more head space and focus.

At the most two. If I finish reading one book I usually find another in my bookcase. I will be reading Persuasion until my next book. I’ve just finished reading The Secret Keeper by Kate Morton that had a lovely twist at the end and the one before was The Lost Apothecary by Sarah Penner, the latter rather sinister as it dealt with poisonings. My choices are rather eclectic. Another one was The Midnight Train by Matt Haig.
I have friends who read and we also exchange books. The school books of Joanne Harris, starting with Gentlemen and Players are waiting on the shelf, but I have to reread the latter before reading the two that follow. I always read before I go to sleep. I feel a bit lost without a book.

I always have one book on the go cannot read 2 at once

For most of my life, I only read one book at a time. But now I usually have three books going at a time and sometimes up to a dozen. I really like switching back and forth. It probably has something to do with joining Goodreads. I like to see the list of books I've read grow and also constantly come across new books I want to read there. I am usually concurrently reading one novel, one book of short stories and one non-fiction book.

I can only immerse myself in one book at a time

One novel. I really like to consider the issues, and take notes to remind me about it in the future. At the moment "Anna Karenina". (Tolstoy). I have read this before, but now that my eyesight is getting weaker I'm enjoying listening to it on Audible.

Always a fiction book on the go - just the one which I usually read in 1-2 weeks, plus some non fiction on my bookshelves which I dip into frequently

On mostly, but if I am going somewhere to wait, I start another. Take two for a holiday, but only read one at a time.

Now if you had asked how many crochet projects on the go, that might be another story.....

Three at the moment: a Judy Astley "Just For The Summer", an Alison Weir "The Cardinal" and one of those self-help tomes "Open When......." by a Dr Julie Smith, full of tips on how to kick-start yourself into positive thinking in all manner of situations. I might try finding out if any of the advice actually works. One day.

Well done all you great readers.
As I am partially blinded it takes me ages to read one book

Samsara1 Thu 15-Oct-26 10:30:13

4

Usually just one fiction novel, occasionally two if they are completely different genres. That might be because I've forgotten to bring the current book downstairs from the bedside table.

I am an avid reader but only one book at a time for me. If I am having a sleepless night I can read a whole novel. My husband thinks I don't sleep because I am reading but it's vice versa.

Rosiebee Fri 16-Oct-26 08:57:24

Usually one novel, a couple of non fiction books that I dip in and out of and a book on Audible. I tend to listen to the Audible when I'm in the kitchen cooking or ironing. I don't use the books on my Kindle as often as I used to. I think there are several on there which I was part way through before losing interest. Like another poster, I wouldn't like to count my crochet projects in the go....
