If anyone has read this book, and enjoyed it, it is currently being serialised on Netflix. We watched all 4 episodes last night. I found it very moving and well acted.

Also enjoyed Cloud Cuckoo Land by the same author.

* !! * !! -

I was given Cloud Cuckoo Land for Christmas by my daughter in law who thought I would like it. I am a few chapters in, but can't get properly involved. Nobody seems to act in a normal way. The characters are very unrelatable. Any hints as to how to approach it?

I loved both the book and the series. DH and I read the book quite a few years ago just before a trip to France. It was lovely to see St Malo, knowing more of the history of the city.

So it was likely 6 years between reading the book and watching the series. I knew the ending was different, but couldn't quite remember the details of the book. However, I know that it is hard to condense a thick book into a 4 part series, so gave the producers and writers credit for entertaining us while still mostly sticking to the plotline.

One small thing that bugged me...watching an American actor (Mark Ruffolo) playing Daniel LeBlanc fake an English accent while acting as a Frenchman. Just why?

Yes, I thought the adaptation was really good, so thoroughly enjoyed the film too.

I like to read the book first before watching the film.

So do I Patsy. Then I can complain about the film adaptation which I usually do!!!However, the adaptation was good and kept to the book without the usual temptation to mess with the original.

Wonderful book, but so-so Netflix series in my opinion there was just too much to try to squeeze into the tv series. Also, it starts near the end of the book, then tries to cover the past by flashbacks.
Better to just read the book as is often the case.

Saw the Netflix series and really liked it, but haven't read the book. My DH has listened to the audio book and said it went on for a bit too long for his liking. I've got the book but have only.read the first few pages then gave up. Maybe I need to stick with it?

Aldom I am partially sighted so I thought I would try it. I heard about it through RNIB Talking Newspapers which I receive.

My DH read the book through the RNIB talking books. Thousands to choose from and they're all free.

I loved the book and read it recently . I often find that film adaptations are not as good as the original books.

Luckygirl3 Wed 03-Jan-24 22:08:57

The book is excellent; the film is not. I was very disappointed in it.

Foxgloveandroses Wed 03-Jan-24 22:05:47

I watched it on Netflix. Absolutely loved it.

I loved the book and it stayed with me, as Aldom says. I don't want to spoil that with watching the film (although if I run out of good things to watch, I may change my mind.)

I saw episode one of the Netflix drama but didn't enjoy it. Perhaps I wasn't in the mood for such a cartoon bad guy and brave good girl story. Parts of it felt very derivative so I just gave up on it. Lots of other things to watch. Sorry fans of this programme but it was not for me.

I loved the book, easy writing style, engaging characters and emotional story. However, the Netflix series was disappointing. Acting is generally good, but the dialogue felt awkward and a bit cheesy.

Charleygirl15 I thoroughly enjoyed the book. It's a story that 'stays with you'. The book is by Anthony Doerr.

mrstin Sat 18-Nov-23 15:41:14

Author is Anthony Doerr. I am reading this book at present.

Charleygirl5 Sat 18-Nov-23 15:37:55

Who is the author please?

TerriBull Sat 18-Nov-23 11:02:08

I read the book, I quite liked it, thought it had an unusual quality about it. Having said that it wouldn't join my list of very "best books" though,

I haven't seen the Netflix production.

Sar53 Sat 18-Nov-23 10:15:04

I've not read the book but have watched the Netflix series. I thought it very well acted especially the main blind actress.
Reviews are only what one person sees. I always like to make my own mind up about what I am watching.
One can always turn it off it not liking what they are seeing.

Aveline Sat 18-Nov-23 09:26:32

Reviews only reflect the opinion of the reviewer. I often find that I disagree with a review I've read sometimes positive but sometimes negative too.
