I’m doing a presentation on the 1960s and thought I’d start it off with a typical piece of music.
As the talk is of life in England - our experiences and recollections, I’d like to be a British group or singer.
Thank you

Donovan's Catch the wind.

He lived round the corner from us but I never did catch a glimpse!

Introduced me to Baker Boy caps, still love wearing one!

There are some classics here, and many of them have stood the test of time . Not British, of course, but I have mentioned before that " God Only Knows" by the Beach Boys is " their song" for my youngest daughter and her husband. They left church as newly weds to it.
She was born in 1989.

Everlasting love - The Love Affair
Nights in White Satin - The Moody Blues

I love 60s music, it takes me back to a time and a place, loved ones no longer with us...
I always start my Saturday with Tony Blackburn's Sounds of the Sixties on BBC Sounds. I listen to Greatest Hits Radio 60s in the car. Isn't it great that we know most of the words and can sing along to these classic songs?

Great thread, thank you.

Donovan's Catch the wind.

I was a child in the sixties, and the one I remember best is My Generation by the Who, probably because the words resonated the most at the time.

AskAlice Sat 16-May-26 17:12:42

Or "Flowers in the Rain" by The Move - first song played on Radio 1.

AskAlice Sat 16-May-26 17:11:05

I'm into Something Good - Herman's Hermits. I know it's not psychedelic or "Hippy", but then not all the decade was dominated by Flower Power! Every time I hear it it seems to take me right back to the 60s. Released in 1964.

NotAGran55 Sat 16-May-26 17:08:37

For me it has to be a Beatles song for the sixties, so Hey Jude gets my vote.

Allira Sat 16-May-26 17:03:54

I think The Beatles are the most iconic band of the 60s.

There were so many others, but they were the ones who revolutionised pop music and were most famous.

Its impossible to limit it. Weren't we lucky?
We certainly were!

Find a pin Stoker!
Making sure it's British, of course:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_UK_singles_chart_number_ones_of_the_1960s

England Swings but that is, of course, sung by Roger Miller, an American.

merlotgran Sat 16-May-26 16:20:11

This is Dedicated to the One I Love - Mamas and Papas.
My Generation - The Who
All You Need is Love - The Beatles.
Paint it Black - Rolling Stones

Far too many to mention really.

SpinDriftCoastal Sat 16-May-26 16:15:12

It would have to be The Kinks with You Really Got Me. It has a very strong first riff and it explodes into the Sixties and grabs your audience attention immediately let alone them wanting to get up and start bopping.

Nannee49 Sat 16-May-26 16:11:04

If you asked for 100 I'd still struggle Stoker48!

It's so difficult because every single year of that magical music decade had it's own stand out tunes and associated memories. All of the above plus
She was just 17...Beatles, jiving and doing the Cavern stomp in our youth club
The times they are a'changin...Bob Dylan, marching round town with CND banners and sleeping out overnight at the local cenotaph.
God only knows...Beach Boys, hitching lifts to Rhyl and camping out
Reach out...Four Tops dancing our hearts out to our beloved Motown
All you need is Love...Beatles, working the season in Newquay and all the girls gathered in the still room singing together, cleaning up quickly before getting ready to go down to the Sailor's and
I'm a believer...Monkees sung a bit tipsily at the end of the night walking back.

Such wonderful memories and such a lovely thread.

MT62 Sat 16-May-26 16:09:18

It would have to be Bob Dylan’s Subterranean Homesick Blues.
Elvis’s In the Ghetto.
I was only a toddler but remember my dad playing these two songs.
I’ve always said 60s was the best time for music

joannapiano Sat 16-May-26 15:51:26

Go Now, by The Moody Blues.
