Slow cooker very hot?

I recently purchased a second hand Judge slow cooker. Unlike my old smaller Morrisons one this one gets extremely hot on the outside at the end of cooking. Is this normal? TIA

I have a Morphy Richards one and yes, it gets very hot on the outside.
