Has anyone moved to Wales?

Thank you for your replies. I looked more closely at Powys and it does seem more rural so will carry on looking at Carmarthenshire as well. We don't need hospitals now but have to think of possible future needs. We know Abergavenny and Monmouth so will consider that too. Llandrindod Wells looks a lovely town to visit. I have always lived in Dorset so it is exciting and daunting.

We moved from Australia via North West England to Anglesey forty years ago and have never regretted it, warm friendly people, a mild climate and never more than twelve miles from a beach. The landscape is mildly hummocky so great for walks, big hills not so much fun as we age.
Most small town have a doctors and dentists surgery. The main hospital is on the mainland but never more than about half an hour away.
We did have a few years in France, chasing sunshine but came back to chase away each hour of hiraeth when we came home again to Wales.

We moved to Wales 4 yrs ago. I was born in Wales and was thrilled to be able to do so. We sold our house, put our stuff in storage and stayed with my DD for 4 month while we looked around. My DD had moved there several years previously. Don’t know much about Powys as we are in Carmarthen. Doctors and hospitals here are good, although we haven’t really needed either. NHS dentists are non existent.
Best thing we have ever done though. Lovely generous friendly people .

The hospital situation is tricky.I see two different consultants one at a welsh hospital and one in an English hospital.
We are nearer to the Welsh hospital but on the two occasions I have needed emergency treatment I was taken to the English hospital as we have an English postcode.

It is definitely worth finding out the situation with healthcare where you choose to live.

Something to be aware of is that Powys has no large District General Hospitals so nowhere with an A&E department or specialist treatment centre.

You would have to go over the border to an English hospital or further into Wales if you should need treatment.

I meant to say rural but within reach of small towns.

We live just over the border in Shropshire and absolutely love it here.There are plenty of places in Powys that are within easy reach of small towns.

My husband is from West Wales so where we live was on our route to visit his family so we knew the area reasonably well before moving here.

We have thought about and nearly did 2 years ago, but we would have rent in the area we were moving to first for 3 to 6 months just to see how it went. Now we won't as my health means 3 monthly appointments at the hospital and the one I attend is excellent. Also need to think about dentists as I know the area you are thing of going to is very scarce with dentists.

My Mum and Dad moved to Wales when they retired, to Ceredigion. They loved the area, the neighbours, the fabulous landscape and the wildlife. They lived in a pretty village on a hillside overlooking a valley, so the views were to die for, and their new-build cottage was warm and snug in winter, with a level garden for summer.

The negatives were there too. The very vocal Welsh nationalist contingent in their local area made them feel very unwelcome and somewhat threatened. As my Mum’s health deteriorated, being some distance from hospital along narrow, steep, winding roads became an issue, and in winter they were sometimes cut off because their village was accessed by a 1:4 hill.

My mum loved it and died there, but it became too remote for my Dad on his own, and he moved to a small market town in England after her death.

Where are you thinking of moving? You mention Powys which is lovely but quite big and pretty rural, they get a fair amount of snow. The Wye Valley not quite as far as Powys is very pretty and has more public transport. I am Welsh, although I don’t live there at the moment, having moved nearer to family bit Wales is lovely I hope you enjoy it

We moved to Wales almost 40 years ago. We bought a cottage in a small village and the views across the valley were beautiful. It is a peaceful life.
I have moved about a mile away now as the cottage was too big for just me when all the children left. I still have lovely views, pleasant walks in the countryside and friendly people.
I have never regretted moving here from a busy town.
