Nobody is talking about "changing feelings to suit the fashion of the day," but of being open minded. Life experience is a great educator which is why old people are often surprisingly less judgemental than we might expect. OK, some old people.
But for instance, you might have a prejudice against a religion, race or sexual inclination never having met anybody in those categories. If you get to know them and (in the case of family or good friends) love them, the prejudice comes a long way second.
Fashion does not come into it.
