I have to finally give up cross stitching, arthritis in hands and low vision. I am sooo bored. Thought of tapestry , wool much thicker and canvas have much larger holes, but -
Have looked on line , saw cushions and some kits which seem to be cotton threads .
Would tapestry be kinder to hands and can someone recommend a site selling tapestry kits
Thank you

Question, please. Is tapestry like what is called needlepoint or petitpoint in the States? It uses a half stitch rather than a cross. If so, I do a lot but use blank canvas and stitch from a pattern.

Petra

Recognize the pattern?

The judge obviously liked it too, as it's just got a first in the village show. smile

Thanks, * Petra*

Actually, I've just had another look at your photo and think I can work the pattern out ?

That one is from a book called ' Florentine Embroidery' by Barbara Muller. Available on Amazon £3.08p.
Very simple to understand instructions.

Petra
Regarding your post from 13 April, showing your beautiful bargello work - I don't suppose that is from a free pattern available on the Internet, is it?
If not, I will have another search to see if I can find something similar, as I've been longing to make a cushion similar to that ever since I saw your photo.
I've finally finished my latest project, this morning (two cathedral Windows cushions for my mum), so I am already itching to start something new ?

If you are looking for a small tapestry project you might be interested in a doorstop kit to cover a house brick. They appear on various websites. I made an oak-leaf one years ago which was much admired.

cascats. it’s a Twilley kit , will check if I can buy the same wool.

cascats Mon 15-Apr-19 09:11:48

Hi, Guessing the kit is standard tapestry wool, so yes any should do, If you are buying the kit online, could you email them and explain you are planning to fill in the background and asking them to recommend a suitable wool and possible colour choices?
Lol, this talk of tapestry is reminding me I still have one packed away to finish! (mind you have 3 partially finished knitting projects on my side table to do first! )

Anniebach Sun 14-Apr-19 18:48:24

cascats I didn’t think of doing that , my younger daughter so wants roses , as it’s a kit I assume any tapestry wool would be suitable?

cascats Sun 14-Apr-19 18:01:57

Hi Anniebach, just an idea but if you really like the Roses tapestry kit but not the ' no stitch' background. What about filling the background in with a neutral colour, maybe a pale cream? Have done this successfully once with cat tapestry.
Good luck with your new hobby.

Petra

Your cushion looks beautiful!

Anniebach Sun 14-Apr-19 13:30:35

Thank you .

I had no problem with cross stitch, until arthritis struck my hands.

Lovely cusion petra, my younger daughter wants roses , I found one she loved but I didn’t like the unstitched parts on the work,

I will look at Vervaco and Bargello tapestry

petra Sat 13-Apr-19 13:44:29

Annie
Have you seen 'Bargello' tapestry?
It might look difficult to some but it's very very simple, believe me. It's done with wool and silks.
Here's one I made earlier grin

NonnaW Sat 13-Apr-19 13:19:47

annie have you looked at Vervaco kits? I’ve done several cushion fronts and found them quite easy with lots of choice. Cross stitch, on the other hand, I struggle with. I bought a kit to make a Christmas stocking for the grandson. Two Christmas ‘s later it’s still not finished (maybe this will be the year?)

Anniebach Sat 13-Apr-19 12:52:26

Back again !

I have been practicing tapestry stitching , now ready for one to show off .

Can’t get to a craft shop so have to buy on line. Seen a lovely
cushion for my younger daughter , not sure if I like the unstitched fabric surrounding the roses , surely the holes look odd ?

I love butterflies as did my elder daughter , I have a glass one with beautiful painted wings she bought me

Fennel Tue 26-Feb-19 12:00:34

I think butterflies are an excellent choice. It's one of my favourite symbols too:

Elegran Tue 26-Feb-19 11:39:19

Are there scattered bits of a colour? You could move around them, carrying the thread across the back between patches? Not as neat as working in rows, but it would start holding ends.

Anniebach Tue 26-Feb-19 10:33:27

Elegran this was my mistake, I chose a small kit but butterflies wasn’t a wise choice .

Elegran Tue 26-Feb-19 10:30:09

Hold down with the other hand the starting end of the first colour you use until you have the backs of a couple of stitches covering it.

Elegran Tue 26-Feb-19 10:28:23

Start off by doing a bit with lots of stitches the same colour - then you have something solid at the back to take that end through. for later stitches you will have more already in place.

Fennel Tue 26-Feb-19 09:17:43

And don't tie knots as it would cause a bump on the picture side. Keep the back flat and smooth.

Jessity Mon 25-Feb-19 21:41:57

It gets easier to secure a new strand Annie once you’ve done a little more of the design. You’ve then got more stitches to slide your needle through the back of four or five stitches. Pull that strand through till there’s just a smidgen showing, then push the needle through to the front and pull the thread through.

It does work, trust us!

Anniebach Mon 25-Feb-19 21:23:32

It would be easier if one could tie a knot ?

Fennel Mon 25-Feb-19 21:04:19

I'm so glad you've taken the plunge, Annie smile.
Good advice from Elegran - don't worry if the back is a bit untidy.
