14 Speeches at the wedding we attended this weekend.

Boring- there should be just 4 - father or mother, best man, bride, groom. We went to one where the friends came out with some really foul stuff about previous sexual activity. Totally inappropriate, I must be a prude.

At my sisters second marriage, she alone made the speech.

Started as she intended to continue.

Weddings years ago started with the ceremony then the wedding breakfast then hours on end doing nothing until the evening. If you where stuck in the sticks somewhere it was very tiring and boring.
How things have changed we went to a very large wedding in London some years ago. The speeches went on for a hour and half it was unbelievable. It was the most extravagant wedding we ever attended. Money was no concern what ever the bride wanted the bride got. The groom is a relative and we had never met the bride until the actual wedding day.
The marriage did not last eighteen months as we expected. It was just a day that the bride wanted the glitz and glamour centre of attention the actual marriage didn’t matter.
Since then we have attended two weddings not as sumptuous both occasions were just a show for other people to envy. What a shame all the pomp and ceremony meant so much but the actual marriages didn’t.

I went to a lovely fun wedding of my friend’s son a couple of weeks ago. I have known him since he was a toddler and he and my son are close friends. There were a lot of speeches , it was his second marriage and both his teenage children spoke - really lovely, his two best men (one was my son) provided the hilarity, then the bride’s dad gave a sweet speech. The groom also gave a very nice speech.I really enjoyed it and am so pleased that he has found a lovely girl . We were all so sad when his first marriage broke down. The speeches were very entertaining and didn’t go on too long. As most of the guests were medics and sports fanatics it was a very riotous inebriated affair!

Last time I went to a wedding (some years ago now) there was a long gap between the service and the meal in a city center restaurant. No information as to what we were to do or how a non driver like myself was to get there. I lost interest and got a taxi home. I have not been to a wedding since. They can be unbelievably tedious.

We went to one like that. The speeches went on and on and I felt sorry for the bride’s parents because they were completely swamped by the groom’s family. Just when we thought it was all over we had to troop outside and watch a tree being planted in memory of some absent friend who obviously couldn’t be there because he was dead!
DH muttered, ‘Lucky bugger!’

I’d have either gone asleep, gone to the bar or taken my husband for a needed by then haircut …
That must be a record… you poor things :/

Haven’t been to a wedding for about 40 years sounds that I ve dodged a bullet there

There was fizz there for us all while they had some outside photos taken. Short speeches by the bride’s dad and the groom, then a very funny double act from the best men - his 2 adult sons!
A very different way of doing things and less tedious than many speeches I’ve heard!

Very much the same at our daughter’s wedding. All the official part and four speeches at venue then onto another place for dinner and dancing.

How many loo breaks 🙂

Been to one with maybe 5 speeches. No more than that.

There is a rule amongst our own family, that no speech to be over 7 minutes.

At least women had the chance to speak at your wedding Sago. Though maybe 5 bridesmaids were pushing it a bit….but
Why shoukd it only be men, Fathers, grooms and best men who speak.

Definitely OTT. Were they trying to prove something? Which was the best one?

My son was married last year and we had nothing like this.

It seems very self indulgent to me and I would have been extremely hungry by the time the meal was served!

Good grief, I am surprised you are not still there - you are not are you?

That does seem excessive. I have noticed the Mums are becoming more vocal, nothing wrong in that as long as everyone is brief, but if the total speeches go on longer than 45 minutes I would be getting a bit restless!
