Yes I know what they've done. But how does it better the Queen?

Clearly you have little or no knowledge about this topic.

Generally, I don't ask questions about things I already have knowledge about. Isn't that how it works?

Because I would like to know. Perhaps there might be some kind and charitable soul who might wish to enlighten me. Or, you know, back up their undying devotion to the lady in question by explaining what she has done for us.

Because I'm afraid the "we're not going to say because you won't appreciate it anyway" approach is a bit silly, isn't it?

Or perhaps the appreciation just has to be faith based; don't ask questions, just believe.

Yes I know what they've done. But how does it better the Queen?

Because, me personally, I would have thought that their achievements were down to them being active in the pursuit of their aims and objectives, rather than being alive for a long time and not complaining.

And since nobody seems to be able to ante up any actual achievements of Queen Elizabeth II, other than that, I am not dissuaded from my point of view.

They voluntarily went for the post of President and, in Mary Robinsons case served six and a half years and in Mary Mc Aleeses case fourteen years with a clear agenda that they wanted to achieve during that time. Very admirable but totally their own choice and for as short a time as they wished.

That doesn't mean a monarchy is appropriate in this day and age but, given what was expected of her, she gave of her best.

So seriously, what are the duties that she has faithfully performed for the past 70 years for which we are to be so grateful?

And I'm afraid "she gave of her best" reminds me a little bit of "leave Boris alone, he's doing his best!"

No I'm not. I just find your posts a bit bizarre. As I said I'm no monarchist but the x Queen did not choose her role, did what was required of her with good grace and cannot be compared to two Presidents who stood for election to the role.

Being critical of the principle of a monarchy and being critical of the person who gave her life selflessly to fulfil that role when it was thrust on her are two different things.

No seriously Vintagejazz. We're told we are blessed, she's done her duty, all that.

I'm afraid I don't think anyone deserves devotion for just being there, no matter how long they hang on. I admire people who achieve something. And nobody, nobody at all, has told me what she has achieved. I expect people are shocked, but while I appreciate that she has done nothing to upset any applecarts, I really struggle to understand what she has achieved.

Not expecting an answer. Hopeful though.

Well you think she was just being there, I think she had an awful job thrust on her, accepted it with dignity and grace and did her best to keep the country stable at huge personal expense.
