AIBU in thinking acronyms are irritating and can be counter productive. It may save the poster from a few moments typing but it can cause the reader to take more than those few moments to figure out what the hell is being said. Just spent time wondering what OH was. Turns out it was other half!
Thanks, Terribull. I get it now. In fact I’ve been using the abbreviations frequently without thinking too much about it! It’s become like second nature now. I don’t mind the use of these acronyms/initials/abbreviations or whatever they’re called as they save time. DD for dear daughter and SIL for son in law etc etc also takes up less space, so I for one will carry on using. Sorry if it annoys anyone.
All codes, abbreviations and jargonistic expressions are aggravating to some extent. Many of them are also very interesting and useful. I think the counterproductive complaint is easily overcome with a modicum of effort.
Its even more annoying when everyone tells you the explanations are at the the top of the page. Thats only on the desktop site and I prefer the mobile site.
In a book by Dick Francis one of his nasty sneering female characters kept calling her despised husband dear, as in dear Brian couldn’t do this and dear Brian is useless. It drove him nearly to murder, so since then I’ve always thought it a derogatory way of speaking. Good job it was only fiction.
