Acronyms are aggravating!

And yet you started off your post with an acronym?

I totally agree! I would far rather the words were written in full as I find the majority of acronyms spoil the flow of the sentence.

I’ll be pedantic and say they are mostly abbreviations not acronyms. (GNHQ have it wrong)

I ve said my piece in many threads about this in my opinion its lazy, meaningless ( the silly silly darling, dearest bit) it takes two seconds longer to write the word out and the same people will complain about young people not spelling correctly or using txt speak
If like me you don’t like it and it annoys you DONT do it

I don't like the darling, dearest bit either! seems quite unnecessary to me.

I was over on MN a while back on a thread where the poster kept referring to her LO, couldn't for the life of me work out what this "LO" was clearly very important in her life, then it all became clear "little one" (bit twee in my opinion, two words when one will do, baby, toddler, child I guess we are all different!

I thought you meant something quite different when I read the title - is it just me that finds it annoying that on the Gransnet homepage the Acronyms link is immediately below the Active Posts link, and I keep on clicking on the Acronyms link by mistake - very irritating.

honeyrose a lot of people write DD or DS or DDIL which amounts to dear daughter, dear son or dear daughter in law or it could be darling daughter etc or even dismal, dratted whateve4 the poster has in their mind but for us readers to work out for ourselves by the sense of the post

I always make a point of typing Ddog, Dcat even Dnewt once.
I can absolutely see why others find it annoying though.

FC, once I’d mastered what the DD, DGS etc. meant, I like using them. I’m fascinated by your Dnewt, but you do realise that I’ll never again see the word Down without mentally checking the context!

I do not read the posts full of acronyms and the D is particularly irritating.

Well it doesn’t make me feel part of a community ? it’s much more likely to make you feel left out if you don’t ‘get it’
To me it feels like ‘They do it on mumsnet so we must be ‘with it’ and do it on here’
Anyway each to their own I ll keep writing long hand and asking when I don’t understand
