One that I find irritating when I can be bothered is people saying ‘purchased’ instead of ‘bought’. Why? It sounds so pretentious somehow. ‘I purchased the property’ instead of ‘bought a house’
.
At least most people don’t buy houses very often, but some people purchase shoes, or chocolate.
I don’t know why it rankles, as I think it is correct usage, if a bit ‘legalese’, but it does.
