To wish people wouldn't mess with the classics (lighthearted)

Quite agree about Far from the Madding Crowd. We watched Anna Karenina at weekend. New version. Suffice it to say we were not impressed! We love the old 'classics' being used at moment on the ads.

Me too .My local TV station uses 'When I fall in love' to advertise what I consider an item unworthy of this classic.

DJC hip hop Ode to Joy would be fun, but increasingly unpopular as some people realise it was adopted as the European Community Anthem in 1972.

It's always fun when the kids think they've found a new song and there we wrinklies go, singing along, knowing all the words!

Any kind of lift music makes me want to jump off a cliff, regardless of what the original tune was. It makes everything sound the same. Worse still, the tuneless music - just series of chords strung together - you get in spas and salons which are supposed to make you relax. Puts my teeth on edge and makes me soooo aggressive!

There are some great cover versions of "classics" out there today....and most sound better than they did in the 60s and 70s. As a person who absolutely loves music and am never without it, I especially like a number of rap versions of the "classics". The rap gendre brings the true poetry of the original lyrics to the surface. Wonderful!

My gd has been clearing out her room and gave me some books for the charity shop amongst other things. Among the books was To Kill and Mocking Bird, so I have kept that as I only ever saw the film. Funny enough in America they are going to take it out of the school libraries because the language is out of date, can you believe it, we have Shakespeare and trying to get your head round that is hard but they are classics.

The biggest meddler with the 'classics' is the film industry itself! My self imposed rule is: read the book first then watch or, more often, never watch the film. I understand the reasons why books need to be changed for film making but I can rarely get away with the choice of actor for much loved characters. I remember my dismay at seeing Orson Wells cast as Mr Rochester!

I'm not making it up - we are living on Netflix right now, as DH is more or less prone on the sofa due to a broken clavicle.

I really enjoyed 666 Park Avenue when I watched it so decided to read the books it was based on. I enjoyed the books but the programme had only used the title and nothing else.

I often end up feeling like this

Since I am a newcomer to GN, I have been browsing - classics? Little Women? Looked at it on my new Sky TV - NOT what I expected! Oh dear, has anyone else been caught out on this one? Then joy, the real Little Women has been remade, recorded and saved to savour this weekend. Hope I am not disappointed.

There is now a cafuffle about some operas , Carmen and Rigoletto were named, violence against women etc

Operas, or any classics, have to be heard in their historical context. We can’t put modern ‘political correctness’ into that context.

I think the fuss was actually about the way the violence was depicted on stage, which is usually much more graphic than it used to be. One of the singers (Fabiano?) was objecting to what he was told to do by the director - or something. I haven’t checked the story.

I dont have a problem with music being "remashed" I think its what music is all about.Mind you I rarely listen to anything thats more than a couple of years old even though I have a huge CD collection.I do like the new Gregory Porter album ...singing Nat King Cole ,lovely version.I hated Rod Stewart murdering "Have I told You Lately That I Love You" noobody sings it like Van Morrison but I do avoid remakes of films.The Thomas Crown Affair was ruined as was the Bishops Wife which was remade with Denzil Washington and Whitney Houston ,the original with Cary Grant,Loretta Young and David Niven was pure pleasure more recently the adaptaion of My Sisters Keeper was a major disappointment as they changed the whole ending...ruined it

That tune is the EU signature tune. When there's a memorial service in our village they have a small brass band playing it .
It sounds like a dirge.
