Why can't he answer the question I asked?...

DH doesn't have confusion as a justification for not answering question he is asked. He just never answers the question anybody asks, his answer is always to the question he thought they probably wanted to ask.

In our household the conversation would have gone
'How much did that cost?'
'I have put it on my mastercard'. (personal expenditure)
'Yes, but how much did it cost?'
'It was cheaper than driving to Oxford to get it'
'Yes, but how much did it cost?'
'DD has got one and recommended it'
at which point I give up.

He doesn't just do it to me, we have been away with DD for 10 days. She gets really exasperated and teases him unmercifully about it to no noticeable effect.

His other little trick is never answering yes or no, always 'probably'.

'Did you have a sandwich for lunch?' 'probably'. Have you a rehearsal tonight? 'probably'

Oh yes that is familiar. Obfuscation is the name of the game.

I have a few cryptic responses of my own.

Husband to me: "So-and-so at work complimented me on my new blazer/haircut/whatever today". Me: "I hope she still likes you when you have no money..."

(He is actually quite wary of women being the only son in a family of 6, but he likes to think he still has "pulling power").

If himself is dallying about I usually say,
"that requires a yes or a no answer !

Yes, Nonu, but do you get one? I have tried that and in my case it doesn't work. I still end up with 'probably', even when there is no rational answer other than 'yes' or 'no'.

I have a husband who simply answers 'no' to absolutely every question anyone asks so I don't expect anything different. I reckon he is actually a robot and is programmed in some way or another and just can't help himself. The kids think it's hilarious, they will say things like 'think I might ask Dad if he'll come over and help put up some shelves, he will say no of course but I know he'll do it anyway'.

At least he answers the question I suppose!

My husband is hard of hearing so you can imagine our conversations, he almost always get conversation wrong and our daughter shouts out "GET YOUR HEARING AIDS IN" to which he replies "what did you say".

He usually says he only needs them for the TV.

So frustrating when you ask a question that need a yes or no answer and you get " hold on, I'm just doing this" or "can't answer now , I'm busy".

Surely it is quicker to say yes or no !

My partner always gives a long answer when a yes or no would do. He DOES answer the question - just takes 10 times longer than necessary.
My son on the other hand never answers the question, especially on a text:

Me: What time do you want me round to babysit?
Son: We have to be at the event at 8 pm.
Me: So what time do you want me to be at your house?
Son: Before the kids go to bed.

ARRGGGHH!

Can't contribute properly to this thread as my DH answers everything very directly.It's ME that goes all round the houses sometimes when answering.
