Well I am an addict and proud of it! Love it all even the boring bits and now love Ambridge Extra.......I believe I am not alone either????

Anne58 Wed 08-Jan-14 10:48:58

Thanks Nonny I thought I was losing it for a while! Any idea why? (the new actor I mean, not me losing it)

Nelliemoser Wed 08-Jan-14 11:25:39

I thought Tony sounded different! So I wasn't imagining it.

Nelliemoser Wed 08-Jan-14 11:27:03

I think he Colin Skipp has retired.

Mishap Wed 08-Jan-14 15:08:47

I only spotted the changed Tony last night - was that his first appearance? - or had it all been floating by me?!

Anne58 Wed 08-Jan-14 15:11:01

I too only noticed last night, I think it may have been the first, but not completely sure.

Soutra Wed 08-Jan-14 15:12:39

old"New" Tony Archer completely unconvincing - the old one had that petulant teenage whine which was totally unsuitable in a man of his age, but on second thoughts, knowing men of his age, maybe not. The Helen saga is dreary beyond belief and where is Ilona then? Ilona who was so devoted to "Jeck"??? Surely she'd have been round to see Peggy by now. Honestly!

Anne58 Wed 08-Jan-14 15:13:08

Who the hell is Louiza?

There was an advertisement on TV last night for some new magazine for making sweets, the voice over sounded like the actress who plays Kirsty, has anyone else heard it and thought the same?

grandimars Fri 17-Jan-14 14:06:26

I thought the same. I'm sure it was Kirsty.

Grannyeggs Fri 17-Jan-14 15:08:47

The girl who plays Emma has also branched out of The Archers, and is making a name for herself both in film and the stage. Can't remember her name or what she is in.

apologies for resuscitating an old thread but I have found the Archers of late worth listening to for addressing the issues (dreary Helen saga excepted grin)
they are up to date with the flooding and the plight of farmers
they are highlighting young against old - Tony (whinging he may be) and Tom (overconfident and whiny)
the battle over who inherits and how leapfrogging a generation can backfire if someone feels slighted (in this case the dreary Tony)
the cheek of Tom asking his aged Gran for money up front - and his plans of what to do with his 'inheritance' which is not there yet (Gran still alive)
if it was me as the Gran I would have said no money till I am gone - scale back your wedding first.
at least Pip is 'oop north' but we now have the Helen/Jess/Robb triangle - am I the only one who finds the Helen character completely unsympathetic and somewhat manipulative in leaning so heavily on others.
anf finally - they have highlighted the vulnerability of old people who live alone (Jill) and suffer anti social behaviour.
sorry to be a nerd but I mostly enjoy the Archers and feel they do try to be realistic with their scripts (unlike most other soaps - on TV)

shysal Sat 22-Feb-14 08:30:47

mollie65, I am an Archers nerd too, and you have put all my thoughts into words! I knew Rob would let Helen down, can't see a happy ending there.
I read that they hastily recorded some extra bits to cover the flooding.
I thought Tom had an almighty cheek asking for some of his inheritance up front. A loan I could have understood. He is such a bore about his business, Brenda is well out of there, hope Kirsty can put up with him.
I have been waiting for the Ifty and Elizabeth love story to get going, but have heard nothing for a while.

Anne58 Sat 22-Feb-14 10:48:15

Glad to see that there are a few of us Archers listeners!

Culag Sat 22-Feb-14 11:42:55

I wish I could give them up! The trouble is, my radio is on all the time and it's inconvenient to get up and switch it off for 15mins. I also dislike the characters as mentioned above - you know what's going to happen with the story lines long before it does. But after 50+ years of listening (with some breaks), they become part of your life.

nannyfran Sat 22-Feb-14 12:35:37

I agree, Mollie65, it has been better lately, have they got a different writer?I had been tempted to give it a miss over the past couple of months, but as I go back as far as Grace getting killed, it would have been a wrench.
Helen is a pain in the b.., and let's hope Rob gets eaten by his poor cows.
I thought Elizabeth had told Ifty that she wasn't ready for a relationship, but that was ages ago.
My DH drives me mad by saying he knows what is going to happen next about various story lines. Even more exasperating, he's often right!

Nelliemoser Sat 22-Feb-14 12:55:46

My name is Nelliemoser and I am an Archer's addict. I have been an addict since 1972.

I think the current storylines are OK, people can be idifficult. Tom and Tony are both behaving stupidly at present, Tony has become more awkward and miserable since his heart attack. Tom has got above himself.

As for Helen and Rob!!! I am away all next week out of the country and I will miss it.

chloe1984 Sat 22-Feb-14 15:22:28

Have to admit to being an avid archers fan and have been since the seventies. When working I would listen to the omnibus on a Sunday whilst doing the ironing. Now I am retired I listen to the podcast each evening. My DH professes to hate it but strangely can always be relied on to know exactly what is happening! I love the Helen and Rob saga so far. Also the Tom and Tony /Peggy storyline. If only they would bring Nigel back and ask Clarrie,Will and Jolene to tone down their accents just a bit........ I also used to listen to Waggoners Walk but think I must be the only person to remember that serial on the radio but used to love it.

merlotgran Sat 22-Feb-14 15:30:05

I used to love Waggoners Walk, chloe. I was stuck at home with a baby and toddler so I have to admit I also listened to Mrs. Dale's Diary!!

nannyfran Sat 22-Feb-14 15:30:23

I remember the name Waggoners Walk,chloe1984, but can't remember what it was about.
Talking of accents, how come Will has an East Anglian one, was Clarrie a naughty girl?

merlotgran Sat 22-Feb-14 15:31:05

I must catch up with The Archers again. It's that time of the year when I can disappear into the greenhouse on a Sunday morning with the radio and a mug of coffee.

chloe1984 Sat 22-Feb-14 15:42:05

Mrs Dales diary I used to listen to that with my Mum when returning home from school - had forgotten all about it thanks for making me relive some really cosy times when she and I used to be in the kitchen me supposedly doing homework whilst she was baking or preparing an evening meal.
As for Will's accent goodness only knows ......not so sure about Clarrie but didn't she once have a bit of thing with the French chef at Grey Gables?

mollie65 Sat 22-Feb-14 15:49:32

merlotgran - exactly my idea of a Sunday morning. If it is possible I sit in a sheltered corner of the garden with dog, cup of tea and listen to the omnibus version (always seem to not be near a radio for the 15 minute slots during the week.). it is obviously easier for them to change the script on radio to reflect 'reality' as the actors read from the written word but it still makes it better listening rather than TV soaps that live in very much a parallel world
I think most Archers listeners are those of a certain age as growing up in a world of no/or limited TV - the radio provided our drama and fired our imagination in a way that visual pictures take away.

nannyfran Sat 22-Feb-14 15:51:11

Ditto Mrs Dale, chloe1984 except it was my Nan, I think I must have gone there after school most days. She was a great cook and always had the radio on in the kitchen. It makes me feel warm and safe even after all these years, thanks for the memory.

shysal Sat 22-Feb-14 16:03:23

I used to listen to Waggoners Walk and The Dales , as I seem to remember it was called by then. It would have been in the early '70s I think. That was when I came back to the Archers and have stayed ever since. I was at home during the day at that time, with my young children, and did childminding too.
Did anyone notice that the voice of Clarrie changed back to a previous actress a few months ago? The voices are quite similar.
It is strange that I enjoyed these radio 'soaps', but have never bothered with those on TV.

Anne58 Sat 22-Feb-14 23:19:24

Aaah now, I could tell you a story about Mr P , the Archers and me! (Romantic sigh!)
