Have watched the whole series on catchup and have absolutely loved it.

Nannylovesshopping Tue 21-Nov-17 08:27:41

Just found this, so so funny, I am cringing with embarrassment for them all, Tegan2 we must have the same warped sense of humour haha!!

This series is so funny and like you Nannylovesshopping I find myself cringing for them. So well observed.

maryeliza54 Tue 21-Nov-17 08:47:34

It’s brilliant

One of the writers is Sharon Horgan who wrote and starred in a brilliant sit/com called "Catastrophe", very funny albeit rude!.

Motherland is well observed, particularly the Queen Bee/bitch, sure there's one of those in every school. My first experience of "the muffia" when my first one went to school somehow seemed worse than my own school days. They were out in full force, what seemed like every day selling something or other from tressle tables in front of the main entrance, so the beta mothers such as myself had to run the gauntlet while we were pestered to buy tickets for dinner and dances etc. etc. My husband did the school run occasionally and when asked to buy a ticket for such an event he replied "I'll happily give you some money not to come" One of my friends at the time, a single mum, who didn't have spare cash did speak up and said she found it unacceptable to be hassled in this way just trying to deliver her child to school.

I love this and I loved Catastrophe. If you have Netflix try Odd Mom Out similar but American vein - very funny.

Having watched it all on catchup I then rewatched it. Phoned up my cousin to tell him how good it is [we share the same sense of humour] and he'd done the same. I found myself, throughout the day, thinking of bits of it and sniggering away to myself. It reminds me a bit of [was it] Green Wing, but it may be because the male character reminds me of wotsisname Mangan [sp]. What's great about it is that it works on so many levels. I'm thinking about the party episode now, and the cat man grin...

kittylester Tue 21-Nov-17 14:53:08

I absolutely love it. He is like thingy Mangan isn't he and also like the man who was in a funny spy thing with James Corden. I love thingy Mangan. grin

kittylester Tue 21-Nov-17 14:53:44

Stephen!!!!!

I watched the pilot a few months ago and couldn’t wait for the series.
I binge watched all of it last week, brilliant and so well observed. I’ll never look at caterpillar cake in the same way again.

Grannyknot Tue 21-Nov-17 15:32:37

I watched the first episode and didn't like it at all (although I did enjoy Catastrophe)!

I felt that most of the comedy had already been explored in Catastrophe, so it seemed stale, and the opening scene with the main actress (can't remember her name) ad-libbing in the car when she was late - just made me feel irritated with her as in "get your act together".

I must have been an Alpha Mom grin (not)!

I might try and give it another go, perhaps I was just not in the right frame of mind...

Tegan2 Tue 21-Nov-17 15:45:35

I did think the same at first, but only stuck with it because I was pottering about the house and the tv was on; but, because it was on catchup and other episodes popped up I then started to warm to it. I did think that the main character was overacting terribly but it was her two sidekicks that I loved and then I warmed to her as well. I must watch Catastrophe, although I have a feeling that I tried that and didn't like it.

kittylester Tue 21-Nov-17 15:58:12

I didn't like Catastrophe at all and I tried it about 3 times.

lemongrove Tue 21-Nov-17 20:59:38

Is this on BBC?

PamelaJ1 Tue 21-Nov-17 21:21:56

I haven’t watched catastrophe but motherland was recommended to me by someone who, I thought, had a similar sense of humour to me.
I obviously have no sense of humour at all!

Tegan2 Tue 21-Nov-17 21:35:11

All humour is very marmite, isn't it. I sat the S.O. down to watch Detectorists and I could tell he felt he was watching paint dry sad. Yes; it is on BBC.

Tegan2 Tue 21-Nov-17 21:43:23

On the subject of humour, does anyone remember Hyperdrive? It was on for 2 series and then they didn't commission a third one. It was the first thing I saw Miranda Hart in, and I loved it but I think I was the only person that watched it. Have just found it on utube. Also Spaced and Black Books. I think I gave my DD,SIL a video of Spaced but I don't think they liked it.

Grannyknot Tue 21-Nov-17 21:47:49

Tegan I loved Space!

Grannyknot Tue 21-Nov-17 21:47:59

Spaced!

Greyduster Tue 21-Nov-17 22:51:13

‘Black Books’ was truly brilliant! I don’t think i’ve seen Dylan Moran in anything since.

Tegan2 Tue 21-Nov-17 23:04:56

I saw him doing stand up and he was truly awful sad. Of course, Bill Bailey went on the greater things [and I understand he is good live, but I've never seen him]. I've got his birdwatching book, though [that's good].

Eloethan Wed 22-Nov-17 00:43:33

I'm really enjoying Motherland. I found Catastrophe, though very funny in parts, too rude.

Grannyknot Wed 22-Nov-17 07:53:02

Eloethan I agree with you about Catastrophe being rude, often around the couple's sex life. I sort of tuned those bits out with a "Would anyone actually do that?" But mostly the humour was fresh.

The last series of Catastrophe was quite dark and I wondered where it was heading given that it is billed as a comedy.

iCustomBoxes Mon 27-Nov-17 20:04:44

I'm fully enjoy the motherland also found the Catastrophe very funny albeit rude.

maryeliza54 Mon 27-Nov-17 22:02:21

I loved the line in this weeks epidode - Julia to her mother ‘ I’m too busy looking after your grandchildren’?
