Delete Button

I agree Mollie when I was an active member of another forum the edit/delete was extremely useful!

I think it would save HQ a bit of work and time. Recently I had to contact them to request that one of my own posts was deleted, it would have been very handy to have been able to do it myself.

This is the only forum I know of that doesn't have an edit/delete facility. I don't understand the reasoning behind it, to be honest. Does Mumsnet have one?

GNHQ did tell us why, once. It was something about altering the whole meaning of a thread if everyone kept editing their posts, or something like that .

Well, it doesn't cause problems on other forums, does it? Anyway, you are supposed to give a reason for the edit which would then make it clear why you've changed it [with me I hate seeing my typo's which get worse by the day ].

I know, I'm the same. And sometimes you just have to post again, correcting yourself!

If that's the reason for not having an edit or delete button it sounds like we're being managed rather than allowed to have reasonable, rational free speech.

I agree, phoenix. I wouldn't want a 'like' button particularly, I think that sort of thing can encourage competetiveness.

Yes, there's a current thread called Bookmarks! somewhere down the list, Stansgran.

It would mess the thread up. Probably wouldn't make sense if posters started deleting bits of a conversation. Would be a right mess.

But threads can be messy now, people answer posts out of order, refer to comments made several threads back. I would like the right to delete things I've written for all sorts of reasons, not just dodgy spelling or a misplaced word.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by 'deleting things', mollie. Do you mean whole posts? Possibly days later?

I don't know - as I said, I don't understand what you mean by a delete button. To delete what, exactly?

If you want to delete a post you've typed but haven't posted yet, either use the backspace to remove it, or highlight the whole thing and press delete.

If it's already been posted, I'm afraid it's hard luck!

Whatever my reasons I would still like a delete button facility. Or a post-posting edit button. Facebook allows it, other forums too. Why not Gransnet?

Exactly. As I said, it will say it's been edited and you can give a reason for why you've edited it [eg bad spelling; concern that youve put your point across badly etc]

If you want to delete a post, "report" it to GNHQ and simply ask them to delete it. There will be footnote to the effect that "post is deleted at the member's request". Perfectly easy and straightforward.

They do it very quickly too
