We have gone far away for Christmas, leaving DD, SIL and two gorgeous grandchildren home alone (the other grandparents are deceased) for an extended period.

We feel rather selfish but also feel we need to live our own lives while we can. We are very close and loving and highly involved in our familiy's life. But, we felt that they might enjoy Christmas on their own for once and before we become needy and they become obliged to spend Christmas with us.

They seem to be OK with this, but goodness knows what they are saying to their friends!!

It was obligation that made me do what I did and I will never do that to my family. For the 11th time in the last 15 years we will have Christmas Day on our own and no-one will mind.

For the first time in heaven knows how many years we're celebrating Christmas on our own. Really looking forward to it. Both daughters with the in laws. We will miss them, and they will all be with us on the Sunday. But it wil be bliss to be just us two.
