Ectropion in dogs

I think this is where the eyelids and lashes turn inwards and the eye is constantly irritated and can become very sore. I had a springer that had this problem and he was operated on very successfully.

This is where the eyelid rolls outwards and the bottom eyelid droops. Making the eyes sore and red

I have entropion in one lower eyelid - the same eye as I have been getting regular injections into, so they don't want the eyelashes scratching the eyeball and possibly letting infection in - so I have an appointment for a clinic to look at it and potentially do surgery. Apparently they stitch it down to pull it flat.

My little yorkie had entropian and eventually had his eye removed cos of infections, he’s been fine ever since, he’s 16 now!!

It is a very uncomfortable condition indeed. My friend runs a cat charity and very recently one of the unwanted cats had his eyes operated on. Before the op this cat had serious behaviour issues but since surgery he has turned into a beautifully natured animal. Another friend who runs a small dog charity recently had the same with a Yorkie. Expensive ops for both the charities but a huge difference in these animals well being.

Entropion is more likely to be acutely painful than ectropion because the eyelashes rub on the cornea when the lids turn in. Ectropion can make them more likely to have infections etc, tears might not drain as well, but moderate ectropion doesn't always cause problems.
My last Cocker had a degree of ectropion, but didn't have surgery for it. He did have surgery for cherry eye (prolapsed lacrimal gland) but the vets didn't correct the entropion as it wasn't causing problems.

A cocker spaniel weadopted aged 2 had this condition, was operated on before we had her and never had any more problems.

I have had both eyes surgically corrected for entropy, successfully.Quite common in dogs!😂

My MIL had that done very many years ago.

The waiting lists were much shorter all those years ago!

As others have said…En is In, Ec is out.
En quite often needs a small op with a skilled vet.
Ec can mostly be left alone. Quite often the dog loses the fatty pad under the eye if they lose weight for some reason , aging also comes into this.
It is very common in Spaniel types.
You may wish to ask for a referral to a Canine eye clinic.

Ectropion is pretty common in cockers. If it’s bad, surgery might be needed.
