Do you use a Furminator on your Cat?

I used to use one on my cat and it was very good. A word of caution though - use it very gently to start with! You’ll soon get the hang of it! ?

Having just spent the last few days trying to groom the matts out of my cat by putting the biscuit and treat tubs on the desk to keep her occupied while I attempt to comb her I might have a look at this. She is impossible to touch but I know she needs the under hair of her coat removing. She has no teeth so is unable to do much more than washing the top of her coat! I've had to resort to the scissors on some of the lumps of fur!

I used one for my dog and it was good, he was a very hairy boy, but you definitely need to go gently.

How do you all wash your pet’s bedding? Mine is covered in fur and makes the inside of my washing machine all hairy - horrible and still loads of fur bedding when it comes out! I’ve tried trying to get hair off with a rubber glove and then hand washing but very hard still! Any tips?

The furminator is fantastic. Our vet suggested it to us and it works very well plus Baz our Maine Coon loves it. He purrs and purrs as we remove binfuls of fur from him. He has a triple coat so needs the longhair version of a furminator but there are several sizes.

Hooty you can get detergent that dissolves the hair in the washing machine which is very good. You have to use it on a very high wash but I've used it and it does work. I bought it in BM Stores but can't remember the name.

HootyMcOwlface well we have a labrador who sheds hair like nothing on earth. I use a furminator which does help and gathers loads of hair. Her bed is a mat that is covered in a 'suede-like' material which is easy to hoover. This is much easier to keep hairfree than a bed (which are usually made of 'teddybear' material).

I use a Furminator on my cats and it’s very good indeed. I winced at paying something like £14 for a ‘cat brush’ but it’s well worth the money. As Squiffy says, start off gently with it and you’ll soon get the hang of using it.

Willow I’m not sure a Furminator would get out the matts from your cat’s coat but I think it would help prevent them from forming again once you’d got rid of them. We have had Persian cats, one of which matted terribly, so I feel your pain!

HootyMc. Furminator make a gadget to get hair off clothes etc so might help with Bedding too?

Hooray I bought a special bag to put the dog bedding in when washing. It keeps all the hair out of the machine, and seems to magically dissolve the hair, as there is very little left in the bag afterwards.

I've now ordered one from Amazon.I'll let you know what I think when it arrives.I just hope Madam lets me use it on her.
She loves the rubber grooming brush I use now and even crouches down near the cupboard it's kept in to let me know she wants me to brush her,which I do each morning but still the hairs keep coming.

Having tried lots of different coms and brushes on my elderly cat, I bought a grooming comb from Pets At home. It was £10, and it has got curved teeth which cut out the knots and matts as you comb. It's the best £10 I've ever spent on my cat and he loves it.

Two tricks for removing cat fur from clothing, cat's bed etc.

One is to use the rubber brush you brush the cat with, the other to use a plastic pot scourer and throw it out afterwards.

Spread the things to be brushed out flat and work from the top down.

Both the cat's brush and the pot scourer can be used on soft furnishings and carpets. If you have woollen carpets you can dampen the pot scourer slightly.

You can even get fur off sisal matting this way.

Hooty I bought a washing bag for pet bedding online for under £10. You just put all the bedding in the bag, zip it up and voila! No hair in the machine. It collects in small clumps inside the bag which you can just tip out.

avitorl- you won't regret your purchase! Baz is a slow moving old thing but if he gears me lift the furminstor he comes running and heaves himself up on to the work surface I use when grooming him. We both enjoy it and after a last smoothing down he has some Dreamies and I have to use the lint roller all over myself!

Yet I have a part Persian but she doesn't shed ? I brush her fur to prevent any knots but there's very little " fall-out ". The only thing I notice now and again are the odd little clumps of fur ( easy to pick up ) when she preens herself which must annoy her so she pulls them out but other than that I have no shedding problems from any of the three cats.

HootyMcOwlface I got mine from Amazon. Type in "Pet Bedding Washing Bags" under the Pets section, and there's a terrific choice. I got one of the bigger ones so that I could wash 2 beds at once.

If I don't give Baz a furminate from time time to time I see the difference when emptying the hoover! The fur isn't obvious at all on looking at the carpets but we are always amazed at the amount I hoover up.

One of ours loves it and purrs furiously, the other constantly tries to eat it! It does get a lot of fur out, but the teeth are quite sharp, and almost seem to cut the hair.

I did want to try it on DH, but for some reason he wasn't keen

Well looks like I’m going to be spending a fortune on Amazon - looking at wash bags, hair dissolving stuff and Furminators! ? Thanks to everyone for all the info!

so disappointed, Furminator arrived from Amazon but I have been sent the wrong size ie large instead of small.
I wouldn't want to risk using it in case it caused any injuries to my cat who is a very petite lady.Fortunately I am being sent a replacement so hopefully second time lucky.
