The thread about ‘goes’ (as in attempts or tries) reminded me how much I hate hearing ‘I went …’ and ‘he goes …’ rather than ‘said’. Am I alone?

No, you are not alone! "Goes" is no shorter than"says", so it doesn't even save any time or effort. confused
