I'll assume that USA won't be sending any help to Ukraine in future. Putin will be pleased.

I thought that Trump was going to end the war on his first day in office?

He's a few days late but I'm not holding my breath...

The last thing I saw (yesterday) was that Trump was tgreatening Putin with tariffs if he didn’t stop the war.

Not that that is much of a threat. Trump doesn’t seem to understand that it’s the importer who pays the tariff, not the country exporting to them. It might reduce imports slightly, but the main effect would be to make imports more expensive for Americans.

However, it’s a Trump threat, implying that he doesn’t support Putin in continuing the conflict.

If Americans do 'drill baby drill' the international price of oil will plummet. That will be a major setback for Russia. Good.

I think from what I read that DT is tightening the thumbscrews on both leaders to end the war there.Both leaders may be secretly glad of it as it’s one of those wars that could drag on for ages with neither side winning.

The thumb screws are only for Zelensky to give in to Putin...

Maybe, maybe not, but regardless I think both sides now want out without too much loss of face.

I think it is.

If a sovereign country decides to increase its energy production, it must be a commercial, stand alone decision. Becoming rich through oil revenue won’t be a lever for USA against Russia over Ukraine any time soon. It will take time to organise.
What bothers me most is the wilful destruction of the lives of so many young soldiers whether from Ukraine, Russia or North Korea.

If Trump can stop this war who are we to criticise him? Many lives will be saved. Just because you find the man abhorrent doesn’t mean he can’t do some good in the world. I agree with ronib

My husband has just explained to me the way the oil futures market works will have an immediate impact on oil prices following Trump’s drilling statements. So that might be a good enough lever to engage Russia?

What does that have to do with the issue??

We don’t have conscription in the UK. I have two friends with sons in the army, they are following in both their Dad’s footsteps and know full well what they are signing up for.

The real story is that Trump does not intend to continue funding Ukraine, I don’t see Europe uniting and replacing that money.
There is no chance whatever that the lost territory is going to be retaken by Ukraine, the sensible choice for the fighting to stop and accept the lost land, however unpalatable that is.

Cossy I wouldn’t be happy for my sons to die on the battlefields of Ukraine. It is a completely senseless war.
Of course we need young people to defend our country. That’s not in doubt.

At the moment, our government is not offering soldiers but £3 billion a year for the next 100 years so that other nations can have their military engaged/killed.

According to google over 800 Russian soldiers and over 100 Ukrainian soldiers are being killed EVERY day..
It's an unbelievable waste of young lives..

As a weaker country, even with help, Ukraine will be forced to compromise when, as you say, it’s done nothing wrong, but that’s life sometimes.
It’s better surely than this war rumbling on.It still means that Putin won’t actually win even if he accepts a face saving deal.

I think the British should get out of Ireland,too.
