Of course it is not a good reason, Jamie Driscoll was a good mayor but he was slightly left wing, he was also popular, for those reasons he had to be ousted by Keir Starmer.
I really fear for Andy Burnham who has done a good job here in Manchester and is also popular, coming first in every region of Greater Manchester.

I wouldn't call Ken Loach "dodgy" He is very left wing, but he films regularly in the NE. He's an award winning film maker and they were in a Venue called Live Theatre. The only clip I've seen they are talking about film. I just wonder who else is on the Labour Black List for people not to be with?
I think most of us thought Jamie would be a candidate.

There is definitely less democracy in the Labour Party now. Whether people agree or not. Keir has to get rid of the left doesn't he party politics instead of policies, perhaps he's keeping his powder dry. The video is by Just Some Geezer it has a fair bit of swearing the young man is not approving of Starmer and makes it plain with many valid points.

Where are the centre left Labour supporters who could (presumably) explain what is going on here. They suddenly seem to have gone very quiet. No one on the "far" left to condemn I suppose. Just a bloke who has worked really hard for his local community and been dumped.

Is there a “centre left” or indeed a “centre right” or just a section of voters that might vote for any party according to policies they like.

It is hard to have any faith that policies will be carried through though, by either of the two main parties, whose policies are very similar.

No there are on GN people who say they are centre left and condemn me as left wing for trashing Starmer, but it seems they are unwilling or unable to come to his defence on this matter.

I’m sure there are plenty of labour supporters who think Starmer is not “socialist enough”, the problem is that a socialist leader is highly unlikely to win a GE. Foot, Kinnock, Miliband or Corbyn, none of them convinced voters to trust them.

I’m happy that Starmer is capable of making a decent PM, if the extremists in his own party cause trouble and he looses the election I will be very annoyed. It’s the best chance Labour have had for a decade, it might not what you want but it’s going to be better than another Tory PM

Broadly speaking in the political climate we have he is on the right tack to win the election and try and do what is probably quite limited in terms of change, certainly initially, but oh so necessary to get the support to oust this government.

Politics has swung to the right a great deal and imo you have to take people with you step by step. Real change, in the NHS, in Care, in the willingness even of people to turn out vote, in making better trade deals..these won't happen overnight.

I was determined not to be bullied into commenting, but I will say that I have resigned from the LP over a combination of this and the anti-feminism it has displayed of late with its ridiculous comments on so-called 'gender'.

It is not the party I have supported all my life any more. I will probably vote Labour in the GE, as I can't see an alternative, but my support is now limited to voting as long is there is nobody else. I will never vote Lib Dem or Tory, so unless a new party forms I am stuck with Labour, but I am not happy.

Everything in politics is going really nasty, far left, far right. Never thought I would say this as not a Boris fan at all, but he was driven out. Now I do not trust our Prime minister, nothing he said yesterday rang true. Strikes me that there’s few you can believe. Where have all the people with integrity gone, got out whilst able. It’s a very dirty business, but what goes round comes round, everything passes.

I think though, that it's important that Starmer continues to appeal to people like me, too. I am a lifelong Labour supporter, and if he loses those who are prepared to vote Labour even when they don't agree with everything they are doing (and I do care about women and 'Jewish issues') they will struggle. Floating voters float - they can't be relied on to stay loyal, and it is loyal supporters who are getting sick of the way the LP is moving to the right. I struggled with Starmer's refusal to tolerate MPs standing on picket lines, with the 'women can have penises and men cervixes' nonsense, and now the NE public are not going to be given a chance to re-elect the standing mayor (it should be up to them if they'd prefer someone else). Where will it end?

I absolutely believe that someone has to get the Tories out, but that should be to restore the democracy that the Tories have damaged so badly, not to erode it further.

Lots of people saying won't vote for Starmer. Saying he is a coward ect, more worried about what the Daily Mail would say. Reeves speech on backtracking on Green Deal she said fiscal responsibility embarrassed about having to change tack she should. What an embarrassment Labour are. Where were the loyal Labour supporters at the 2019 election ?

Our clp had potential candidates imposed, with the ex momentum candidate (he’d left momentum very recently) not selected. Many officials resigned. I know them well, they’re all still firmly of the belief that Corbyn is the leader they want. The information on the doorstep that people wouldn’t vote Labour because of Corbyn is dismissed as these people being brainwashed by the right wing press.
I was very happy with the 3 candidates we could select from. All live in the constituency, all active in the party, two councillors.
I’ve no worries that Andy Burnham’s position as our mayor is under threat. He’s rock solid, no associations with anti semitism.
