Hip Dislocation and Holiday

I know I may seem a bit daft here but long story short, I had my 2nd hip dislocation in 2 years 10 days ago. Trip to hospital, agony and operation to reset. But I have a holiday booked which is a 1.5 hour flight away in 8 days time with a friend. Any advice welcome on going forward please, I asked the surgeon if I could travel and he said no problem it's only a short flight and not much moving around once there. Also said I was ok to drive straight away if I felt ok. I've got a GP appointment booked for this next week when I plan to ask him if he'll give me a letter saying I'm ok to fly and will contact travel insurer once I have that - is there anything else I should be doing? I'm aware that it's possible I should cancel holiday but friend is really looking forward to it and I hate to disappoint, so any help much appreciated (smile)

Oh you poor thing! But brilliant that you have been OK's for the holiday.

Best tell your insurers as I am sure you have; but I am not sure why you might need a note to say you are fit to fly -= how would the airline know you have had this surgery?

With or without a letter from Dr I think you will have to inform your insurer before travel, that you were so recently hospitalised for surgery, GA etc.

In the event of any claim for unrelated problems problems, your recent health history will certainly be seen, and "failure to inform" could invalidate the whole policy.

Definitly you have to tell insurance and they may play up as it was so recent but as you say it’s only a very short flight and not much heavy stuff when you get there and you ll have a doctors letter

If you need painkillers ask your GP to prescribe and keep the paper prescription handy so you can show it if you are challenged about your meds at the airport. Have a great holiday.

Thanks so much for the help, I will definitely be telling the insurers but fell into the trap of 'googling' stuff and there was quite a lot of mention of having a doctor's letter so that may have been a rabbit hole I fell down, I'll see what doc says and try to look forward in anticipation rather than panic - thanks again!

You should try to get a seat beside the aisle so you have a little more space to stretch your legs. A doctor's letter may be helpful for that.

I would be very surprised if the insurance company allows the flight because it happened not that long ago.

So I was told I needed a THR before a hol in Sept which had been booked long before my hip took a turn for the worse . I was waiting for cortisone injections . When I informed my travel insurer , annual , I was told I would not be covered for cancellation due to the hip issues but would be covered for any problems while I was away . I also had to pay a bit more for it to be added on .
I don't know if they'll cover you to go tbh but yes you'll have to tell them . Very costly if things go wrong while you're away and none of us can foresee that. What bad luck for you to have this happen twice and so near your holiday . They will probably cover you for cancellation if your hip issues were recorded when you took it out . Good luck .
