Guided steroid hip injections - anyone had one?

DH had three in his shoulder, 7 or 8 years ago, to resolve a trapped nerve problem caused by crumbling vertebrae.

It was done privately and took about 30 minutes. He has been fine ever since, the screaming pain he was in before he had them a distant memory.

I’ve had steroid injections in my shoulder. The first was just a random kind of ‘I’ll jab it in here’ job and did nothing whatsoever. The second was guided by ultrasound, was over before I realised and did the trick.

I did have a temporary exacerbation of discomfort that lasted about 24hrs but painkillers helped and after 48hrs - oh the relief.

I too had a steroid injection in my shoulder 18 months ago. I had calcification in joint and was very painful to lift arm--would only lift so far. A couple of days after injection, which took a couple of seconds, improvement was already noticeable. Within a week it was great.

How long do the effects last?
Is it possible to have more than one?

I think I may ask to have one in each knee if that is possible.

The one I had cured my problem permanently - or at least, it’s been more than four years with no recurrence. I suspect that might depend on the cause, though. I had inflammation of a tendon from over-enthusiastically cleaning windows(!) but I guess if it something like arthritis, the base cause will still be there.

Thanks folks, I have had steroid injections in a shoulder and both feet for fasciitis but not come across guided injection before. NOw my hip is causing the problem and as mentioned the doctor wasn’t particularly informative when I asked s few reasonable questions, very politely I might add.
Now I have been sent an appointment for 10 days time with the usual dire warnings of things which might go wrong and it’s made me a big nervous ?

I had one in my hip on Monday. It was a doddle painwise - no problem at all. But I had a few steroid after effects: insomnia, mild agitation, which have settled now. Hip is beginning to feel a bit less painful now, so it is effective.

Luckygirl I was just reading your other post about hip pain and you mentioned a foot fracture, I have a very painful foot too after a heavy object fell on it some months ago and keep wondering if that might have caused referred pain in the hip but the doctor wasn’t interested in discussing my foot,
It would be funny if it didn’t hurt so much,

Guided ones for major problems seem to be more successful than the random ones you get in the doctor's surgery. I have had several of those in my hands only one of which worked.

I had a 'random' injection in the hip area last month. At first i didnt think it helped but it has definitly helped with the morning stiffness when getting out of bed. An added bonus it has taken away the contact dematisis i suffered with on my hands. They are the best they have ever been for years. I also sufered with the same problem in both ears and i think that was caused by my hearing aids and that also has gone. Steriods are marvellous things. Good luck with your procedure and please let us know how it goes.

I saw a woman interviewed on local news last night who was waiting to see someone about her painful knees and possible surgery and she said the advice is to take 8 paracetamol a day. That's the advice I was given too but she wasn't happy about that and nor am I.

Was given one of these several years ago as shoulder, painfully, clicked when moved. Was like a miracle. After about five years had a further one there, did the trick, but not see brilliantly. Have also had these in my hip. Was told that the maximum number is three at any one site.
The only ones that did not do anything at all, were very carefully guided ones for my thumbs. These were the most painful injections, I think, I have ever had. Pain increased over next two or three days, wore off, and my thumbs just went back to how they had been for several years. Would NEVER try to repeat that.

I have also found steroid injections in my shoulder to be highly effective. My knee didn't fare quite so well and any benefit quickly wore off. The injection into my thumb joint, by the consultant under an x-ray, didn't help at all and surgery became necessary - that worked so well I've had hardly a twinge in 15 years.
