Physically dealing with medication

I know this scenario - OH takes masses of drugs and it is a real sliding block puzzle getting the right drugs in the right place at the right time. It is a joint effort. And they are hard to swallow.

I thought chemists already did this by supplying meds in day/week containers.

Chemists in my area do this for residents of care homes. I assumed they would also do it for those in their own homes who can't manage it themselves but maybe they would be too inundated with requests.

Ask for a dosette box? If they wont put the pills in you could do it a week at a time?

jane10 I don't have the problem yet, and I do 4 weeks at a time, but I can see that there will be a time when it will be difficult

Chemist will put pills together in plastic capsules called blister packs. We had these done for the myriads of pill the MiL had to take. This made life much easier. The only ones they couldn't include in the blister packs was her warfarin.

Here they use dosette boxes for anyone who finds it difficult not to confuse their medication

The tablets I take have changed to a generic type now and they are so difficult to get out of the foil 'bubbles'. I can just about manage it but wondered what would happen if the arthritis in my thumbs got worse or DH wasn't there to help.

Yes the chemist did it for the people who lived in the care home I managed. This was several years ago, I just assumed it was a service offered to everyone who needed it.

OH's shaking hands are a real problem in this situation - filling the weeks delivery boxes is hugely difficult.

Dosettes are another name for blister packs. The pharmacies will do this for you..

My late mil had her meds dispensed in Nomad packs-presume it's a similar method.

Pharmacies may offer medication that is pre-dosed in 'Nomad' packs to help those who struggle.

Jalima1108, we've noticed the same with generic meds, and we're two fit and healthy people! Not that we've bought one - it seems too much like giving in to old age.

jane 10. Sometimes it isn't just having them in the Dosette box as a reminder, it is getting the things out of the blister packs!

DH has Parkinson's, and big hands and fingers anyway, and arthritis in one thumb and wrist. I have to get the fiddly little tablets out of the blister packs otherwise goodness knows what state they would be in . It is a big problem to alot of People, I am sure.

You can buy your own dosette boxes and I'm fairly sure you can get one that has a reminder system. I've heard about it at Alzheimer's meetings - thing is I've forgotten who supplies them.

Dosette boxes are like boxes with sections. Almost everybody I have ever known with complicated medication has or has had them.

Ask your pharmacist if he/she could supply your medication in them and if they won't, find a pharmacist who will. You could also mention this to your GP.
