Spigelian hernia:

I've looked it up, and can't work out where it is. Does it come out just under the ribcage? If so,I've got one, but TG only after certain exertions.

I had the op to repair a Spigelian hernia about six years ago, jacksmum. It was keyhole surgery under general anaesthetic. I was in for two days after the op but that was because my blood pressure was low. You then have to take it easy (no heavy lifting) for a few weeks.

Spigelians are uncommon I think.

Merlotgran, Thanks for this info, trying to get info from hospital about expected recovery is not easy ! , i was asking questions about going out and walking(i own 3 dogs) also driving, and things like lifting kettles/saucepans, but no-one could really give me any answers. Since your op has the area been ok? or do you still have to be a little careful what you do/lift?

I didn't have any problems once the six weeks or so was up. I'm keen gardener and I often catch myself about to lift or dig something heavy and wonder if I should but I haven't had so much as a twinge since the op so I carry on.

My repair op was actually an emergency because a locum doc seemed to think if I went to bed with a hot water bottle I could go on the waiting list for elective surgery. The next day I was in such pain DH drove me A&E. The blasted thing had strangulated ( I think they politely say, 'stuck' these days) so it could no longer be ignored.

I was a bit sore for a few days after the op. I can't remember how long it is before you can drive and walking a dog who pulls on the lead would not be a good idea but other than that recovery should be straightforward.

Thanks ,x wow 6 weeks ,i will be going crazy,Thankfully my dogs walk good on lead ,so no pulling but i normally walk at least an hour a day with them,
