Atrial fibrillation?

I had this temporarily years ago. Yes it is a bit scary. for me, there were ways found of stopping it - sorry i can't remember how now, but it should be online.

Yes - it is a nuisance. I had an acute and fast episode of atrial fibrillation following my hip surgery; I went to the coronary care unit where they slowed it down very speedily and I was able to go home after 48 hours.

My OH has had this for years. He has paroxysmal AF which appears from nowhere but is pretty well controlled on drugs.

Some people have it continuously and take drugs for this.

It is alarming when you get it - I can understand how you feel. If the drugs you have been given are not controlling it, then perhaps you ought to return to the doc and feedback this information to him. It sometimes takes a while to get the dosage right.

There are little "first aid" tricks you can try when it comes on: coughing hard, pretending to push out a 12 pound baby, splashing you face with cold water. All these things can trigger your heart back to a correct rhythm. But it is important to get back to your GP if the problems are not resolving with the treatment that has been given. I assume you have been put on an anti-coagulant.

It took me a while after starting the pills before I felt any better. In fact there was a considerable period of time until the dosage was correct. Give it time . The episodes are frightening though and I find they would sap all my energy(what little I had).I have far fewer now.

My H has this, after a couple of strokes, he was diagnosed with AF, a hole in the heart and a growth on the aortic valve, he was 58 when diagnosed, now takes Warfarin, amongst a couple of other drugs, and has been given a clean bill of health, he considers himself as fit as a flea he's now 68.

DH also has paroxysmal atrial fibrillation which seems to mean that whenever he has an ECG usually when we call an ambulance for one of his fevers, his heart is ticking along fine "in strong sinus rhythm", but nevertheless it can go wonky-ish and so he has to remain on his Warfarin despite the other effects on his blood and innards.
Medication should keep it under control, flamnco so while it might be useless to say it, but "try not to be anxious". However do see your doctor for reassurance or to have your meds adjusted.
