Holiday suitable for a 13 year old and grandparents

My children loved the freedom of Eurocamp holidays because they could find other children to be with without it being too organised. What are your grandson's interests?

What sort of budget?

Centre Parcs are of course brilliant for chilldren of that age - ideal - but expensive!

When we go on holiday we try to plan something for everyone so one day we might do something very child orientated and the next something more grown up. Although tbh our children love stately homes etc so they enjoy the 'adult' days and we're just a couple of kids so enjoy the 'children's days'. However we have a rule that even if someone isn't enjoying it as much as someone else they don't complain and spoil it because the next day it may be the other way round and after all it's a family holiday not just one person's holiday.

Have you asked him what he would like to do?

The YHA (youth hostel association) do great activity holidays where he could do lots of cool activities with other young teens and parents or guardians can watch or participate. The hostels are often in beautiful locations and very comfortable and you can get a family room instead of a bunk bed in a dorm and you don't have to chores like you did in the old days.

Crumbs - my kids didn't come on holiday with us any more at that age. They went off on their various camps and activities and we went our own way. No way they would come with us. At the most, we would join up for a few days' camping together in the area they were staying.

Whether he's sporty or not, I would agree that an activity holiday is the best idea. And YHA are perfect. You can all stay, possibly do different activites (e.g. he could go climbing or canoeing and you could go on a leisurely hike), and he gets to hang out with people of his own age. You don't have to worry about getting food, and the prices are reasonable.

But without any idea of your or his interests or the budget or knowing how far you are prepared to travel, it's hard to make any further suggestions.

Depends how 'old' he is......he might enjoy something like a city break with good museums etc. Cardiff has a great hands-on Science museum and the castle complex is very popular. Am sure there are many interesting cities that might work. We took our girls to York for a week when they were is age...Yorvick, Railway museum etc etc they still talk about it.

Yes, would agree a city break in somewhere like York is both youngster and adult friendly.

I have to say that 13 is still a lovely age to go on holiday with family!
