Oh Dear! An Achilles heel has been pricked! Not sure why he felt it necessary to answer in such a 'ner ner ne ner ner' way and as thatbags says deride other pastimes that people enjoy!
Personally I prefer gardening to fast car driving or other 'exhilarating' pursuits but each to their own. However I agree that Mary Beard and Jeremy Clarkson have obviously not done a days hard graft in a garden if they think it is an easy option for 'elderly' people! I have been gardening since my 20s when I first had a garden of my own.

I must admit I'm a bit bemused by the assumption that gardening is only for oldies!

Perhaps it was in days gone by retirees were the only ones who had the time for it, but I've known many young people who are extremely interested in growing all sorts of things and some are on waiting lists for an allotment. I started gardening (with my ex) when we became house-owners - who else was going to do it?

I've always gardened- learnt with my dad- but he was mainly a vegetable man. I love the English garden style- and most of my perenials have moved to Switzerland from our garden in the UK.

One 'friend' told me once I loved gardening because I don't have any talent otherwise- ah well

Oh dear! I think he's just hooked himself up on his own self-importance.
