Butter - why does it taste so bad?

I’d look for locally produced butter. Small farms round me sell their own butter and cheese so maybe look in your area for small producers or farm shops etc.

I buy a Welsh butter with sea salt crystals from Asda, if I had some I’d take a pic of the pack it’s delicious. Pity I ran out 2 weeks ago ?

Our butcher sells butter from a local farm. It’s a bit pricey but worth it.

I was going to suggest finding a farm with it's own dairy. We have a local farm selling cheese, butter and cream. We cant go at present though, as that would be a non essential journey. ?

There is an amazing difference between the leading brand butters that are sold in tubs compared with the old fashioned block butter. The tub kind have additives to help them easier to spread, yet both will be branded with similar packaging for Lurpak, Country Life, or Anchor et al.

We used to buy Sainsbury’s Cornish farmhouse butter, but since they no longer deliver to us due to lockdown, and have treated us very shabbily despite being elderly vulnerable customers for many years, we will be taking our business elsewhere in the future. My elderly Step mother would only eat St.Helens farm Goats butter, but it’s quite expensive and rather an acquired taste, although l do like fresh Goat’s milk.

Shirgar, a Welsh butter is quite good but block not spreadable version in a tub. It is probably better to buy butter produced as locally as you can as it always seems to be creamier when it is as fresh as possible.

I love President butter, however I try to buy British.
Lidl do a beautiful British butter with sea salt crystals in a black wrapper.

Waitrose sell a lovely Cornish Salted!

I love Anchor butter, and have for many, many years. That is nice and creamy

Yes, the blocks are better than the spreadable, but I still like the spreadable.

If you can bear to buy butter that's not English, then I can recommend Elle et Vire, Président or Beurre d'Isigny. I'd always buy unsalted/doux because of the taste. As a small child I was brought up on Welsh butter (which is similar to Breton so I could buy it here in France now) but as an adult I've grown accustomed to and love the creaminess of unsalted butter.

I love “Lurpak”’ with a bit bread .

Yeo Valley slightly salted - not quite as good as French but tasty.

Have a go at making your own - it's easy to do. Just keep whipping double cream until it separates, add a touch of salt to taste. When satisfied that the lumps have turned to butter remove from the residue milk and pack into a suitable container. Can use the buttermilk in other recipes such as soda bread - which is delicious both with or without butter

President is the only butter for me. I can’t find an English butter that compares

I like Lidl spreadable....butter and rapeseed oil.

It doesn’t taste bad to me at all. I buy various brands,
but almost always British and salted. I positively dislike unsalted butter. As for Lurpak, I find it very anaemic. And I have to say I’m suspicious of any Danish butter or bacon, since the vast volumes they produce surely have to mean a lot of very intensive factory farming.

We buy Welsh butter either Colliers or Dragon brands.

I buy and love a Welsh farm butter sold by the farmer in a food market in Cardiff. You get it in a chunk wrapped in greaseproof paper. They sell salted and low salt.

Love Anchor butter. I would buy the blocks but i always forget to take out of the fridge in time so resort to the tubs. Anyone remember Kangaroo butter from Australia and Fernleaf butter.
