Supermarkets do this on all sorts of products. You really have to keep your wits about you and be a competent mental mathematician. Not long ago, again in Sainsburys, it was cheaper to buy two small pasta sauces rather than a large one and the same went for Bisto. The worst product in every supermarket is Diet Coke. You have to be careful every time you buy it. You'd expect the boxes of 18 and 24 to work out cheaper but the other week it was actually better to buy the same number in packs of 4 cans.

Yes, I'm always standing there doing mental arithmetic on best deal. When shopping with my sons I point out the savings, it never occurs to them to check, they just grab and go. The supermarkets rely on that.

You need a degree in maths to work out which box of dishwasher tablets are best value.

A young Asian employee in Sainsbury's once came up to me and pointed out that the special offer on toilet rolls was more expensive than another pack of the same brand. I do hope he kept his job.

When I had a word with the Manager of my local Waitrose about misleading signage on a 3 for 2 offer he told me it was up to shoppers to keep their wits about them. The same store also placed non-offer Andrex next to the Special Offer sign with non of the offer stuff in sight. It was deliberate because after I'd pointed it out it still stayed like that for another two weeks.

I don't think they think we are stupid - just in a hurry and can't be bothered to do the maths! All supermarkets take advantage of that. It's called capitalism.

I spend time studying the 'price per unit' figures on the shelf fronts. Works for things like loo rolls or identical items like the Coke cans, but sometimes a unit for different brands is not the same size.

This morning in Tesco's - any 5 Heinz soups for £3 beside packs of 4 cans (all of one kind) for £3.29.

I think you are all being very unfair to the supermarkets. Far from trying to con us, they like many are aware of the growing problem of dementia and they are doing their best to help us keep older people keep their marbles for as long as possible by setting challenging mental arithmetic problems for us as we wander round the store.

When you reach 100 years old, open The Telegram and sup your glass of champagne, sound in mind, if not in body lift your glass and drink a toast to Tesco and Sainsbury's, who have set you all those challenging problems that have kept your mind fit and lively.

Now why didn't I think of that explanation ???

The problem with this nowadays is having to keep putting on and taking off my reading glasses!
