I hadn’t either until they were recently mentioned on the radio!

Goodness - that’s a blast from the past!
I can remember buying those and car tax stamps way back when. It helped budget as I was paying for 5 tv licenses and 4 lots of road fund (car) licenses - the old discs.

I’d never heard of these.
I pay monthly by direct debit, all done online so no more tucking the licence under the telly!

The tv licence stamps stopped in 2006.
The car tax stamps continued until 2013.

sad stories about TV licence stamps,I recall many many years ago buying these stamps.
Homes were regular burgled and things that were stolen were tv licence stamps, and because their was no proper records of buying these stamps they lost the monies they had forked out.

Somewhere in the back of my mind are ‘green shield stamps’ - can’t remember what they were for

I remember them but would have difficulty finding a post office to buy them from. Our local PO has gone and looks as if the replacement in what was a Smiths will be shut down.

Green Shield stamps came through buying petrol/diesel (at least mine did). They produced a catalogue of products and there were shops to exchange your stamps for goods. A young DH worked a second job in a petrol station (not self service way back then) and lots of people didn’t bother with the stamps and just told him to keep them. My first set of Tower saucepans was curtesy of those stamps.

My mother used to spread over the year and fill a card for her and one for me. Every Christmas I knew I was getting a licence card she'd filled with stamps and any funds needed to renew my licence were there in full.
It really helped the budget and as a young mother raising a family those stamps freed my finances so much. Simple little stamps and they were a godsend.
It says so much to their value when they were the things stolen from home broken in to - no need for getaway drivers when they can simply put them in their pocket.
For young families there was no 'filing behind the clock' or 'robbing Peter to pay Paul', no final demands, no sleepless nights worrying how you were going to pay that when the kids needed fed and you had all these other bills to pay!!
If ever you were a bit more 'flush' you were able to get some and stick in the card knowing that when it was time to renew the licence the funds or part of them were already there and that was a bit less stress for you.
I can't imagine how difficult it must be for young families in todays world - all they're trying to do is get from A to B just like we did - they could really do with things like that which might help them a bit.
