Smart technology

If technology is so smart why am I inundated with adverts for the same product that I have just bought. If they know that I have been looking at certain items surely someone should be able to programme the system to recognise when a sofa, vacuum cleaner or similar has just been purchased and is therefore not likely to be bought again so soon.

DaisyAnneReturns Tue 09-Jun-26 10:38:58

It's probably because people set up the system. Humans are flawed.

Indeed. Having had obviously brand new windows installed, we still received double glazing leaflets.
We have an internet enabled oven. No idea what it does 😁

But Romilo what you are suggesting, sane though it is, would require the marketing software to be set up to care about the buyer and they don't care at all. Marketing is about selling and it costs them nothing to flood the market with ads. After all, the customer might tell a friend or relation. It's also probably not worth their while wasting time bothering about which item you have bought and from whom.

I do agree that it is ridiculous and irritating. We are constantly amused by ads turning up in Facebook or elsewhere when we haven't been looking but have been having conversations within earshot of our phones or smart speakers.

I heard a podcast the other day about new smart cars and all the smart software included in them which covers things like managing your lane discipline, watching the driver with cameras to see if you are looking tired or yawning, recognising the driver and your preferences for seat height, climate control, audio preferences, apps etc.

Smart is such a misnomer for the world we are moving into, it's scary. Thinking about it, I'd rather ignore the ads than have them profile me even more!

Google isnt interested in, whether you want to buy a second sofa, their business is selling advertising, not customer satisfaction.
They will tell the advertiser that you saw the advert and you bought a sofa so the advertiser is satisfied,

I wasn't really meaning adverts from the company I bought from I meant adverts from other companies who sell similar products trying to sell me something I have already bought from elsewhere.

I wasn't meaning you personally, all furniture buyers, all advertisers that sell in your locality

A quote from 1973 "If you are not paying for the product, you are the product. We seem to get taking a long time to learn this.

Our car is fairly smart and I love it.

It is because the algorythms used by these companies can only choose things to show you based on your past behaviour.

AI cannot yet read your mind as to what you might buy in the future. I tmay do sometime and you can bet your bottom dollar Google et al will immediately use it tor egorm your algorhythms

Our TV is semi smart. I can tell it to switch on, find my program, add future programs to my list but . . .
Since DH watches war, police, fantasy etc. films programs when I’m at the gym, the TV also suggests them as potential likes for me!

If you check you can probably turn the suggestions off.

I understand what you are saying. I am not very mobile and don't live in a town with lots of shops so I buy a lot of things on line. If these algorithms can detect for instance that I have been looking at washing machines why can they not detect that I have bought one on line and therefore sending me more adverts for washing machines isn't going to be productive. Or is that expecting too much .😀

I would, but DH is not technically minded and it would upset him.

When you log in to an online retailer and click on washing machine Google knows, which triggers adverts directed at you it probably does not know when you buy a machine because payment is a secure server, so the adverts continue.

Dont underestimate how much of our electronic activity can be monitored, card payments, phone calls, messages, journeys, anything connected to mobile or Wi-Fi can monitor you.

M0nica Wed 10-Jun-26 08:07:20

I am concerned about being elctronic monitoring in the home. Several times I have spoken to DH or someone else in our study about something and within half an hour there are relevant responses appearing in Google searches.

David49 Thu 11-Jun-26 13:29:31

Any device with a camera or microphone can be hacked to spy on you, we should be much more diligent turning our Devices off when not in use, spy apps are openly advertised.

If you conversations really are being monitored you have a spy programme installed, it can be done remotely.

M0nica Thu 11-Jun-26 16:51:45

I do turn off devices when not being used. But I can operate a computer and talk at the same time, and I may well be conducting a conversation wth DH while sending email, doing a search or reading a document.

A low tech solution, a piece of tape over the camera, same for the microphone it won't stop all sound but it's going to be pretty garbled.

Mamie Fri 12-Jun-26 07:27:45

Every time I look at recipes I get the toe nail fungus advert in the middle of it. I have never searched for anything remotely similar.

The camera is taped over.

But, does it really matter if we are monitored?
