Anyway the older we get the less likely we are to remember how old we are

MrOops suddenly said last night ‘ do you realise we’ve been together 55 years last week’.
Umm, nope, I’d forgotten, but it certainly doesn’t feel that long ago.
Frankly I was surprised that he was thinking about it as he doesnt like to ‘dwell on the past’ as he puts it.
I laugh when i read that shops are proud to have been trading since 1968, What! That’s only very recent, to me anyway.

Can you expand what you are wanting from this thread as I m just not sure Do you want comments about life in the 70 s or comments about getting older (and not realising it) or just the sheer disbelief that it was 50 years ago and counting yes unbelievable !

I realise that every time I look at myself in a mirror which is not very often but it’s when I’m looking back and remembering past happy memories of family events, places I’ve visited ,grandchildrens’ milestones that really bring home to me just how old I am.

Feels like yesterday

I think the OP was just shocked at how the 70s, (which to many seems ancient history) seemed only yesterday to her. She was hoping she was not alone with that feeling and clearly she isn’t.

I watched the archive film of the 1963 freeze on BBC last night and I recalled going to school in the snow. It was a real jolt seeing Cliff Michelmore talking about the events of the winter. Worse than 1947 it seemed.

I remember 1947 too! Tramping through the snow to school, and the snow coming over the top of my wellies. I was 6.

I was a student in London during the 1963 freeze. Young enough to take the numerous difficulties in my stride, e.g going down three floors with a bucket to fetch water from a standpipe in the road.

I'd been in hospital with pneumonia at the end of 1946, so wasn't allowed to play in the snow of 1947. By 1963, I was travelling by train into and out of Edinburgh for teacher training. Along the line, field drains had frozen into the shape and size of organ pipes. The steep road between the College and the University was sheer ice, but we hauled ourselves up using the hand-rail. Linlithgow Loch was frozen for six weeks and curling matches were held; the water birds had a hard time of it. Snow ploughs created great walls of snow along the sides of the roads. One of the few green spaces left in Scotland was Murrayfield Rugby Ground where an 'electric blanket' had been installed under the turf.

I was born in 1943 and aged about 14 I used to wonder why my parents and their generation were still talking about 'the war'. Now I know. What then seemed to me like ancient history, to those who fought in the war /lived through it, only yesterday.

I feel old when I realise my children are 52 and 57. Can you believe it? I must have been a child bride !,!!
