I hope Iām not alone in having strange habits and rituals.
Please add your own quickly and donāt leave me feeling exposed and crazy!!!!
Here goes;
I pull my jaw down and make the most ridiculous face when applying mascara, I say a prayer as I put a cake in the oven, I cannot drink water from an upstairs tap, I stand in one leg when I brush my teeth, I have to sleep with a handkerchief under my pillow, cushions placed at a ājaunty angleā stress me out, they have to be square on.
There are more but I donāt want to become the completely nutty G netter!
Your turn.

The weird things I doā¦confession timeš.
(110 Posts)I have my cushions square on as well Sago
Need to have an extra book on my bedside table in case I finish the original one too quickly
I recently bought an electric toothbrush and now find myself closing my eyes when I clean my teeth- why ?
The dogs have to use the leads which match their collars, I don't like it when my husband doesn't bother.
Going to stop now, I'm sounding odd even to myself.
I canāt bear crooked pictures. I have to sit on my hands when visiting.
I stretch my left Achilles tendon when cleaning my teethā¦
Being quite eccentric, I canāt really figure out whatās odd behaviour.
Standing on one leg or doing leg exercises are recommended for health reasons I think. I sing to my Goldfish when changing their water in order to keep them calm. I eat the chocolate off a Crunchie Bar before devouring the centre.

True story . OH and I went out for lunch with our U3A group. I too have a thing about crooked pictures. Well, the picture near me in the restaurant was lopsided. I reached across to straighten it. It fell off the wall, smashed onto the table and shattered glass ended up in my neighbourās pudding. His wine glass was broken too. Iād probably do it again.
I have to colour match the clothes pegs when hanging washing out.
I have lots of silly habits, most of them to do with counting and symmetry.
I count my garden steps many times a day whilst sitting indoors on the sofa, I know there are 15! I also count the bathroom tiles every time I lie in the bath.
When I remove eggs from their box I have to leave the remainder in a symmetrical pattern. When I eat them on toast I always cut it into 9 equal squares. I cringe if I see somebody bite or cut a corner off!
My meals are always dished up with the different components in a particular area.
I used to 'stress' about matching clothes pegs until I ditched them and bought all the same colour.
I like things in their place but don't care if they are thick with dust!
I never drink water from the bathroom tap, always straighten pictures in the house and like GrandMattie I have to sit on my hands in other places if they have squint pictures. The volume of Alexa, the radio and the tv have to be on odd numbers. When hanging out washing, all pegs had to match colours and, if possible, match the colour of the item of clothing. I gave that up and bought wooden pegs!
Oh Iām feeling very normal, please keep them comingšššššš
I only like even numbers!
I say āthank youā to the hole-in- the-wall on the rare occasion I take out cash.
My saucepans must be in the correct order in the cupboard. Washing cannot be left out overnight even if itās still wet. Iād better stopā¦..
When I hang the washing on the line itās not enough for all the socks to be hanging in a row. Each one is hung beside its partner .

I was just about to post the very same thing! Glad it's not just me!
Very interesting thread!
In common with old wives' tales, it seems to me there may be a āgrain of truthā in some of these habits.
An osteopath told me a few years ago to stand on one leg when the opportunity arose, for example when cleaning teeth, waiting for the kettle to boil, because the exercise helped improve/maintain neural connections.
Back in the day, wasn't there only one tap in a house (usually the kitchen) that provided potable water? Water in the upstairs bathroom wouldāve come from a tank and would possibly not have been safe to drink.
Can't think of a reason for making sure washing is hung out with correct coloured pegs - I do it too, because it looks neater
Washing to be hung out in order and size. E.g. all towels together , large to small. Only one pattern, and that small on my clothing at a time. No spots. Also all colours of clothing coordinated. ā¦.I could go on butā¦ā¦you would probably get bored
I time the housework. I hate doing it, and I use the Pomodoro method to motivate myself, 15 minutes loud music and a timer. However many cycles of this I need, I award myself a reward of some kind (chapter of my book, 10 minutes on Gransnet, coffee, or whatever at the end of every 15 minutes. I canāt bring myself to do it otherwise.
I also count the weeds I pull when Iām gardening. I spend hours outside, but I canāt go back in the house unless Iāve pulled 100 weeds every time.
Iāve never admitted these weirdnesses before.

Surely there is no other way to eat a crunchy bar?
Re closing eyes whilst doing teeth - me too, but I think there is a good reason. With eyes closed I can focus/concentrate on exactly where the brush goes. Makes me more methodical.
shysal cutting into 9 squares was what TV detective Poirot always did. then he would put a dot of jam on each.
As for weird habits one of the pleasures of living alone is that there is no one to point any out. Ex used the word, "weird" a lot. Mind you, he........
Bliss when washing up occurs very irregularly.
Casdon I do that too with housework! I take it a stage further and only do a task for the length of an advert break. I hate adverts so it serves two purposes.
I canāt bear to see a toilet roll with the end hanging down the back rather than the front. I simply have to change it round. I did it when we were having dinner in the home of a work colleague of DHs who I didnāt know very well. It was rather a complicated housing and the whole thing ended up on the floor in bits! They were very good about it but never invited us again! āHeās alright but sheās weird!!ā Iām fiddly about the way cutlery is laid too. All handle ends have to be lined up!
Oh, I do that too, Greyduster. My husband runs his own cleaning company and toilet rolls always had to be hung with the end hanging down the front. Even now, if I see one hung the 'wrong' way, I have to change it.
I don't know how peculiar mine are, they're certainly peculiar to me. Strange face when applying mascara, although I don't wear it so much these days, I'm more of an eyebrow freak now. I often go back and check the handbrake is up when I've parked even though I'm invariably on a level and it always is. Have to check the front door is closed by leaning on it, went out and left it open once, that's where that phobia derives from! I don't like being around people eating eggs particularly when the yolks are runny, a fried egg sandwich makes me feel nauseous. When taking off in a plane I start saying "Hail Marys" when an old school friend and I went to Italy quite a bit in our younger days, she'd say whilst I was hanging on to her and muttering my prayers "that won't help, if your number's up that's it!" the voice of logic
I still do it though!
If buying books or withdrawing them from the library, I would have to have an even number. When I hang out washing all have to be grouped in their respective families eg all shirts together. I canāt go to bed unless cushions have been plumped up, everything made tidy in the sitting room,
My current cause for anxiety is spice/herb jars. Having had a cupboard rearrangement I have just realised that if the labels face to the front, the name or letter on the lid does not face the same way when screwed on properly, they range from the most well known probably, to supermarket own brands ā¦ā¦..itās driving me mad, which option should I take?
I recite poetry out loud in the shower. (I donāt like having showers and it keeps my mind off it.)
If I swat a wasp, I apologise to it. I say āSorry, waspā.
Actually, I think both those things are perfectly normal.

I have small clothes pegs and larger, sturdier clothes pegs. I cannot use a large clothes peg when pegging out socks, hankies etc.

I thought that was normal GrandMattie!
I talk to bees, especially when I save them and put them outside. I say "Off you go and don't come indoors again".
I even had a chat with a spider last night, he/she lives under the cupboard in the downstairs loo and he/she pops out to see me last thing at night and has grown considerably.
Eccentric? Me? Probably.
