New chancellor policies

I guess that depends on lots of other things.....how much savings do you have....what is your private pension etc etc

How could anyone not be extremely worried?

And it is not just pensioners' personal finances that will be hit but the public services that so many depend on, from social care to public libraries via bus services and the NHS.

If as has been suggested Jeremy Hunt is painting the blackest picture, intending to gain popularity later by not implementing all of it that is cruel and irresponsible.

I think we are all worried.

Pensioners have already been shafted enough in this country. We get the shittiest pensions in Europe. Unlike people of working age many in this group are not in a position to get another job or increase their income. He should remember how many of us are (or were) traditionally Tory voters. I have never voted labour in my life but will certainly not be voting for this lot of sleazy gangsters in the next election.

I am definitely worried and just spent some of my savings on a heated throw. I don`t get benefits of any sort apart from single rate council tax. I 100% agree with everything that you say biglouis

I don't think Jeremy Hunt is being excessively doomful in order to gain future popularity, I think he's preparing us for the worse case scenario. If that isn't quite as dreadful, then that of course is a good thing, but if it is, no one can say we weren't warned.

Things may be worse than we are being told.

How much worse will depend on where he decides to prioritise. At the moment his idea of compassionate conservatism seems to be preserving bankers' bonuses.

And yesterday confirmed by LT that she was firmly committed to it, 'and so is the chancellor'. But that was yesterday of course. Today, who knows...

I’m so disgusted with this government changing tack every two minutes. Doesn’t inspire confidence does it? Yes I’m very worried.

I’m in the same position-new Pension so not entitled to Pension Credit or the passports benefits that brings. Liz Truss has guaranteed the Triple lock but can you trust Truss the U turn queen?

Question,,, why do we need a PM and a Chancellor? Hunt seems to be doing both.

It’s been the most ridiculous period in our parliamentary history and it’s not over yet. I have cut all my energy use significantly and I suppose that’s a good thing (wasteful use). I’m scared like most people, I ave just started to receive my pension and had thought I’d be able to live more comfortably but no, it has to be used to prop me up. I’m lucky I’m getting it, I despair for my children and grandchildren.

I am really concerned about treating pensioners as a special case and creating divisions. Anybody, including those of working age, should be worried. We need to show some solidarity.

You need lots of savings if you hope to carry on spending on clothes, new car, holidays... If you are prepared to cut down on heating, cooking, going out etc you might manage within your budget. Worrying about it won't help.

Surely to goodness pensioners ARE a special case! We've paid into the system for years and many pensioners are infirm and can't work. I'm lucky that I do still work and I'm still as fit as I've ever been, but my husband has had two knee replacements and couldn't continue as Forestry Manager. Many pensioners are poorly and they need warmth and good food, or they will die off quicker. But perhaps that's what the government want!

I agree growstuff , there's a lot of young disabled people who are really struggling and people with young families all feeling the pain. And biglouis I hate the idea that younger people think we all voted for Brexit (which I didn't) and are Tories which I most definitely am not. I realise whoever is in government have many difficulties in getting their policies implemented and are up against things like Covid, Ukraine etc. I think where people are coming from is so important and I have always thought Tories try to protect the already wealthy and the cost is a very unequal and unjust society.

Thank heavens for that. Hopefully now that Truss has gone we can get back to more realistic economics. The damage that she has done over the past few weeks cannot be undone, but hopefully a competent and economically literate Chancellor will be appointed to take the reins.

Good riddance to Truss. And her commitment to the triple lock is now worthless. I hope they get rid of Coffey, Rees-Mogg and all the other barrel scrapings.

No, I don't think pensioners are a special case. By the way, not all pensioners did pay into the system - they didn't pay as much as many people still of working age are doing now.

I think the emphasis should be on the poorest, whether they are pensioners or not.
