Increased prices - do I tip my hairdresser?

That is quite a big increase. I am expecting some increase but I was planning a sizeable tip to show my appreciation of the reopening. I think I would still tip your usual amount in this case.

I posted on another thread about a posh salon near me where the top stylist price for cut has gone from £120 to £145 with the excuse of hair needing restyle after lockdown etc !
I never tip and never have.

I have a hair appointment after work . Little back street salon ( the type that still specialise in little old ladies shampoo and sets ) . Prices have risen by 25% which I think will put off her main clientele.

My one woman salon has increased her price for a cut and blow dry from £35 to £40. Quite a large increase but the first for three years and she will seeing fewer clients in a day and her costs for cleaning and PPE have increased so I understand the necessity. Suspect she only charge that to those who can afford it!

So many are going to lose their businesses hiking the prices, most people are not in the position to cover them. If I were a hairdresser, I'd be dropping the costs, more work, more clientele, more stabilised income.

My hairdresser left to have a baby just before lockdown. So I am looking for someone just to give me a dry cut. My hair is just below chin length but thick. I only want the ends trimmed and it thinned a bit. No blow dry.

I go there having washed my hair, so it is a bit damp. The cheapest I have found is £15, which I am going to try. Someone has recommended them. Fingers crossed. .

My hairdresser did not put the prices up but will do so at a later date. There was a notice on the counter. I tipped as usual. The price hike for later is not too high so I shall tip her in future.

For one thing, she isn't the owner of the shop so I imagine she has no control over the pricing.

My hairdresser can only have one client in at a time as it is a small salon (unless the clients are bubbled or live together), She then has to leave 45 minutes between clients while she cleans the salon. She has had to buy extra gowns for her customers and PPE for herself as well as extra cleaning fluids and sanitisers. All this is happening after being closed with no income from the salon for three months.

Elderflower Hairdressers cannot just drop prices to get more customers. The new rules restrict the number of clients in a day.

I was at the hairdressers yesterday, prices have increased by just less than 10%. Everybody was warned by Facebook. I don’t usually tip but this time tipped £5 it was so worth it.

Mine has put up the price by 25% “because it has grown so long it will need restyling”
Actually I quite like the length and will probably only need a trim but I am willing to pay the extra as I usually go every 6 weeks so I have probably saved about £70 anyway.

Also it’s a family business which I want to continue to support and she is a good hairdresser! It took me ages when I moved here to find someone who cuts my hair the way I like.
I usually tip the girl who washes my hair and will continue to do so.

My hairdresser put an extra €2 on the price of my cut and blow dry.

I agree with Lucca no tipping needed. This has come up so many times on here, why do hairdressers expect tips and why is this practice continued.

My hairdresser has put her prices up by £6. £3 for the masks and PPE and a £3 charge overall. She is the salon owner and has just employed someone on a rent a chair basis. She’s not high end but not cheap either - £28 for a cut and blow - £29 for a half-head of foils. I have both every six weeks. I always tip but agree with others - why do we tip anyway? I’ve recently retired and she earns a lot more than me! She has several holidays a year that I could only dream of! She’s a lovely young woman and I love my hair when she’s done it, but she is a shrewd business woman and is always looking for ways to make more money i.e. she sells cosmetics as well as hair products. I don’t buy them - £25 for a “miracle” mascara, anyone? Like the OP said, I’m in a bit of a dilemma whether or not to tip when I go two weeks today (can’t wait). I probably will though.

My small local salon has not put up prices. The owner does my hair and I always tip and will continue to do so. As a small business I want to support them and they are working longer hours to fit everyone in. It would be a sad loss to our community if the salon closed.

My hairdresser is excellent, and has reopened with all Covid19 precautions in place, which have obviously cost more money. She hasn’t changed the prices, but I gave her more than she asked for as it seemed only fair considering the extra expense. She isn’t expensive anyway.

My hair was cut this week. No actual price rise, but OAP discount reduced from three days to two, so I paid the full price. This is understandable with the extra expenses incurred by Covid safety measures, and fewer clients allowed per day. I value my hairdresser and gave her the tips for each of the three cuts missed during lockdown plus tipping for that day's cut.

I think the main factor is whether they are seeing less clients a day. Their overheads remain very similar so tge per capita cost is greater. I’m not going yet so don’t know what mine is doing. I’ve got quite nifty with the scissors I invested in ( cost of two wet cuts @ £27). I didn’t lose any money at all and saved loads, Hairdressers were big losers.

I just have a basic dry trim. The price has gone up by £1. This is to pay for the PPE.
My hairdresser is a lovely young woman, she cuts my hair very well and I don't begrudge paying extra.

i had mine cut on saturday. local barbers.
there are greater overheads ! , with fewer clients, and new items to purchase.
last time 18 march i paid £20 for cut with wash afterwards.
this time he is not doing any washes, sign outside says please wash your hair before coming. and to wear mask, as he does.
so it was just a dry cut, was charged £18, i paid £20, same as before.
so that equates to an increase, naturally enough.
he is very thorough and clean.
i didn't like the look of some other places, too many people in a small space. he only had one client at a time. by appt. no waiting.
i went to him in march because i didn't want to get public transport to my usual. will stick now. he's persian.

Had mine cut yesterday usually a dry cut £6 , washed before I went was charged £7.
Have been going for there for 12 years no complaints

My £8.50 dry cut has increased to £12.50! I’m afraid no tip given in future.

I'm going next week. Not sure if the price has increased or not. But I don't care. I shall be so happy to get it done I'll be skipping out.

But yes, I think a tip is usually just a nice thing to do

They all seem very cheap! Here in Sydney, last week, I paid $107 for a cut and finger dry and that price was cheap!

I would not tip if it's her own business and definitely not after a huge price hike. Cut and blow dry here is around £40 to £45
