There are anti histamine sprays etc. available and I'm no expert, but a smear of petroleum jelly up each nostril definitely helps keep the pollen from irritating nasal passages! Good luck!

I developed hay fever at the age of 34; I was born and brought up in a rural county. When I moved and lived near fields of oil seed rape I suddenly developed horrendous hay fever. My GP was very skeptical but I know that I did get it then and have suffered every summer since. There was something about the oil seed rape that started hay fever; I believe that it's because I was not exposed to the plant when small. It is not a native plant and was introduced from abroad. Get some anti-histamines, put petroleum jelly just inside your nostrils and dig out the sunglasses. You can buy medication that you squirt direct up your nostrils and that works too! hope you feel better soon.

I developed it about 10 years ago, in my mid 50’s WadesNan. The pollen count that year was super high and the newspapers were stating it was affecting people who hadn’t been sufferers before. It’s horrid isn’t it?

I think that allergies can be triggered by the menopause. I have become intolerant to gluten and developed hayfever since.

Yes, it can come out of the blue! I have also discovered it can go as well! I have suffered severe hay fever for over 30 years and two years ago it disappeared! I’m hoping it stays away. I get an odd bout of sneezing and itchy eyes, but nothing like my normal severe symptoms, so I’m extremely happy!

Yes, you can develop hayfever later in life... my friend did. Choose an antihistamine that doesn't make you very drowsy. On the other hand, if you make it a habit to take one around 3 or 4 in the afternoon, it will give you a good night's sleep and the antihistamine effect will see you through the next day till about 3pm.

Yes, it's possible to develop any allergy in later life. I became Asthmatic at the age of 36 (I'm 60 now), and also started getting Hay Fever at the same time. Neither condition is bad now, though.

We’ve lived here for over 50 years and I was well over sixty when they started growing oil seed rape in the fields surrounding us ( very rural area).

It was then that I developed hay fever for the first time in my life.

I take a non-drowsy antihistamine every morning and smear a small amount of Vaseline just inside my nostrils. This does seem to help.

Yes, I too seem to have hay fever, never having had it before and umpteen other allergies, non food based thank heavens, but I have to be very careful what toiletries and skin products I use, and have problems with lots of medications.

I developed hay fever in my late teens and suffered for about ten years till it mysteriously disappeared, then about five years ago I developed seasonal asthma, for about a month a year I’m on inhalers, then it just disappears

Thanks for all your replies. I'm not sure now it was hay fever - bought some Benadryl (recommended by pharmacist) and it made no difference whatsoever! So far this morning, no sneezing, watery eyes or blocked nose - fingers crossed!

I might add that you can now purchase eye drops specifically for 'hayfever eyes' they seem to help with the crying!
