It’s a horrible term isn’t it but I think less used these days maybe?

My dad is 86 and he refers to himself as a wise fossil.

I'm not sure anyone should be called anything, really.
I'm a bit wary of the term 'senior', as I've worked in a couple of 'senior living centres' that would give you nightmares!

Me too Lucky - also think the term ‘hate’ is used too much when ‘dislike’ would be more appropriate. Hatred is such a negative emotion and can make you ill.

Thankfully OAP doesn't appear to be used so much these days. A friend will refer to herself as a Golden Oldie, for example when asking for a concessionary ticket at the cinema - I quite like this term.

I have no intention of ever being old so it wont affect me .Seriously though I dont look or think"old" keep up to date with style and music and can converse with people of all ages .I dhave never thought of myself as anything other than a mature woman and thats how I'm staying ....even when I get my pension( if I finally get it) at the end of this year .

I dislike, when buying a ticket of some kind, 'Is it Adult?".
I say "Yes, I'm an adult and I'm entitled to an Old Person Concession".

I'm curious about when 'old' becomes 'elderly'. At what age is the crossing point?

I don't care what they call me as long as when I'm 66 I get my pension - albeit six years late!

With the pension age increasing up to 68 so people can regardless of gender retire at same age.
Perks are changing as to concessionary bus travel if the government does not give more money towards it to county councils .
The over 75`s TV licence could change.
Anyway I live in a retirement Home for Independent Living , and one tenant has referred to it in the old world as a old peoples home.

At my local cinema we're just "concessions"!

DH & I always refer to any older age concessions as ' the old gits" rate! ???

My dad is 81 and meets up twice a week with a group of guys of a similar age. He calls them “the lads” .

OAP is a very much outdated term with some very lucky people drawing pensions at 55 whereas others (like me) not getting a penny until they are at least 67 . Some people choosing not to (officially) retire at all and others having no choice but to work until they drop dead.

I dislike the term “Senior” I find it patronising and “wishywashy.” Why not just say Pensioner?
But actually, who cares?
Better an OAP than the alternative. ?

I received my State Pension March last year (aged 64 1/2), I have my travel pass, and nowhere does it mention 'old' or 'senior'. It just says 'Concessionary travel funded by HM Government with your local authority'

I just call myself 'Recycled Teenager' 'Old' doesn't not figure in my vocabulary.

I don't like the term OAP either. Just pensioner sounds much better.

But how do you know someone actually is a pensioner? You can’t tell by just looking.

We call concessions Old Biddy Rates!

I don’t understand why the word ‘pensioner’ is used at all. Where someone’s income comes from is no-one else’s business. When I was working, I don’t think I was known as a ‘wage-earner’. Maybe I was but did not notice.
