I carry chairs

In order to set up the interview, two armchairs need to be moved from the ground floor to an upstairs conference room. Before she would automatically have lent a hand; now she demurs bashfully as the photographer and I haul them up the staircase.

A woman who is fit enough to compete in world class rowing nevertheless 'demurs bashfully' when there are chairs to be carried. This is because 'woman' is a new rôle for her, as she used to be a man.

I am an old lady and I carry chairs, if necessary.

This person (not a woman) is lazy and has a sense of entitlement which is certainly not deserved.

ginny Tue 08-Jan-19 11:34:33

I seem to spend half my time carting chairs about and putting up or dismantling tresel tables.
Not sure what that has todo with what gender you are.

Jalima1108 Tue 08-Jan-19 12:08:10

Didn't they have any chairs up there already? After all, it was a conference room?

Perhaps they weren't comfy enough.

Chewbacca Tue 08-Jan-19 14:42:41

This scenario demonstrates perfectly that this person is not a woman at all because a real woman can be relied on to do anything at all within her physical capabilities. Including shifting armchairs up flights of stairs. And real women don't "demur bashfully" at anyone; they hitch up their bras and get on with it.

GrannyGravy13 Tue 08-Jan-19 15:12:45

She is not a woman, she might identify as one, but if you are born a man with male chromosomes whatever you call yourself you will die as a man.

A real woman would have carried the chairs up the stairs in a flash!!!

This whole gender agenda is getting ridiculous!!!!

notanan2 Tue 08-Jan-19 15:13:49

What a misogynistic view of what a woman should be.

This person reads like they are playing out what a mans fantasy of a woman should be rather than behaving in a manner that women could relate to.

EllanVannin Tue 08-Jan-19 15:48:49

Blimey, I've carted some stuff around in my time regardless of the family calling me " Mrs Bucket aka Hyacinth ".

Cherrytree59 Tue 08-Jan-19 16:12:35

notanana2 I agree complete fantasy land.
I think they are a century or two out of date. Swoon swoon

And had they been born before Women got the vote, would they have given up their voting rights to identify as a women and chain themselves to railings??

Put on size 11 high heels, some red lippy OS spider eyelashes and a pair of falses.
'Whey hey I'm a woman' NOT !!

Woman has a womb and can carry a baby for 9 months as well as Bloody Chairs.angry

Exactly angry

Having just read the article, and marvelled at the bravery and horror this person went through, to be herself, I wonder why a sentence about moving chairs was even important enough to include in the article.

Had they'd interviewed Juliette Binoche and she had allowed two men to return hotel chairs (which presumably they or the staff had brought down in the first place) would they have made a point of including it an article?
This says more about the concealed, yet voiced, prejudice of the reporter than it does about courageous Sandra Forgues.

lemongrove Tue 08-Jan-19 23:21:24

I agree with you BradfordL thesee were my thoughts after reading the article, and feel that the journalist put his own slant on things in a very negative way.

yggdrasil Wed 09-Jan-19 08:27:32

How long since she had the surgery?

Maggiemaybe Wed 09-Jan-19 09:23:56

I’ll join you, BradfordLass, in wondering why this sentence was included. I admire the courage of Sandra Forgues and the article, that one sentence aside, seemed fair and sympathetic. Was she asked to move the blooming chairs, did she actually refuse? I’d say it would be quite normal for the people running the interview to shift them, rather than the guest invited for interview. “Demur” seems to imply she was expected to do it - why would she be? confused

I carry chairs about if I have to, but if I am in a hotel I don't expect to have to. Not sure why it is thought that she should do it.

I worked for years as a school governor alongside a very nice trans woman. She was a massively public spirited person and I had the utmost respect for her, but it was interesting how while us ordinary mums invariably turned up to meetings and school events in fleeces, jeans and trainers, she was immaculately coiffed, with high heels and perfect manicure.
I felt it was a sign of insecurity - she felt if she didn't conform to the male fantasy of what a woman looks like, she would sort of slip back into being a man, or be mistaken for one.

maryhoffman37 Wed 09-Jan-19 10:21:48

I didn't expect to find such TERFish comments as some above on Gransnet. I accept transwomen as women; they just haven't been assigned female gender at birth.

nipsmum Wed 09-Jan-19 10:23:11

Journalistic claptrap. Why do people bother reading it ???

lovebeigecardigans1955 Wed 09-Jan-19 10:24:40

Well said chewbacca we women do just get on with things and we don't expect a round of applause either.

Riverwalk Wed 09-Jan-19 10:26:21

How long since she had the surgery?

She hasn't yet had surgery according to the article.

Marieeliz Wed 09-Jan-19 10:27:47

They are not women, they just think they would like to be. They look like men in a women's clothes.

Last week I was in a B&M looking at shampoos, A person rushed up to me and said,"you must buy that shampoo it is amazing", when I looked it was a man dressed as a women. What a cheek another women would not have come up to someone in that way. They are trying to make a point. Don't hear of many women wanting to become a man.

Blinko Wed 09-Jan-19 10:43:45

I do wonder if some trans people think life's going to be 'easier' as a female. Haha!

missdeke Wed 09-Jan-19 10:50:06

I can't even begin to imagine what it must be like to feel that you are in the wrong gender body but one thing I can't understand is the utter selfishness of someone who has known since he was a child in marrying and fathering children. To do this to a woman is unforgivable, he should have told her before they married how he felt and given her the opportunity to make her own decisions about her life. On the subject of the chairs she is just being silly.

mabon1 Wed 09-Jan-19 11:25:38

What has gender to do with this please?

trisher Wed 09-Jan-19 11:27:31

I don't know why or even if she really "demurred" I agree the language being used is biased and intended to make you dislike the woman. I have asked for chairs to be moved for an event in a hotel. I didn't move them it was the staff's job. A bit different to carrying things about in your own home or elsewhere. And when I was teaching I shifted everything although our head teacher (female) always asked the man on the staff to do it if she wanted anything moving. Lots of people hve expectations of women and men.
