I'm still in my bed, and can't stop admiring my hand crocheted bedspread.
I got it from eBay, and the listing said that it had taken the couples aunt 2 years to complete. (I'm guessing she died)
Every single time I look at it, I think about how clever she was, and how she must have loved it.
I'm so glad I can love it now for her. smile
It also was a bargain - around 25 pounds I think, so that's an added bonus.
Have you anything you feel similarly about?

I've had many a bargain on E-bay the latest being a large piece of Lladro porcelain in perfect condition for £11.50. I have umpteen Dresden ornaments and other pieces but no Lladro until a month ago.
Must rein in on the spending now until after Christmas.

The bedspread sounds lovely MissAdventure, I have nothing like that

MissAdventure Sat 03-Nov-18 13:02:23

I love it, Annie.
Its very me..

That is so beautiful MissA , looking at it one thinks of the lady who did it and it could only have been a work of love

That's one of the things I love about it, Annie.
Its huge, too.
My bed is big and very high, and it hangs to just the right length so that it just skims the floor.
I always looked out for a nice crochet bedspread, but the prices rose to sometimes 100 pounds or more.
This one I got for the starting price, so I think it was destined to be mine. smile I thank the creator of it every time I look at my lovely bed.

My best bargain was a book of plays by Goldsmith printed in the 1770’s which I picked up in great condition from a second hand book shop in Arundel for 10p in the early 1990’s I still love it!

I too have a crochet bedspread, not from a charity shop but made by my mum many years ago. Ever since she passed away 9 years ago this month i have had it on my bed, it feels like a cuddle from her every night even though i am nearly 66 i still would love it to be a real one.

MissAdventure Sat 03-Nov-18 13:31:05

It is, not a single loose thread, or pull in it.
I've just remembered that my cast iron bed was 21 pounds from eBay too. blush
I do enjoy a bargain.

MissA I also like that feeling of respecting the love that went into something, or the craft. How lovely that the bedspread has found a forever home where it is loved smile

I was under-dressed for the cold on the high street recently, and popped into the nearest charity shop to buy a cardi or jacket.

I took a hand-knitted, beautifully knitted mohair cardigan off the rack ... looked at the price, £3. It is the cosiest item in my wardrobe and draws many compliments when I wear it.

I suppose it fell into the category of "hand-knitted items not being popular", hence the price. Well, I love it and I'm so glad I found it smile

MissA, the lady who made it chose you ? x

travelsafar how lovely to have such a reminder of your mum.
I have always loved things which are hand stitched, and enjoyed thinking about the life stories of the people that made them.
They seem very personal - far too much to just be discarded. smile

MissAdventure Sat 03-Nov-18 13:37:11

What a lovely thought, Annie. I bought it at a time when I could have done with a cuddle, so my bed was my sanctuary.
Sorry. Its not all about my bedspread! grin

I crocheted one for my aunt

annep Sat 03-Nov-18 13:42:14

Oh thats lovely MissAdventure. I haven't found such a special bargain.

MissAdventure Sat 03-Nov-18 13:42:30

Oh that's a beauty.
It would go in my front room. smile
I'm so lazy that I have never learnt (learned?) to crochet or knit.

For those reading this who give to charity shops did you know they take almost anything? Tatty old books get pulped, rags get sold, it seems nothing is too awful to be used to raise money. I took in a pile of empty jewelry boxes this week, on their own they won't be any use but they can put things in them and ask more for the item because of the presentation.

I knit and crochet and current project doesn't require much of any colour so I buy all my yarn in charity shops even though it costs as much as cheap shops because it makes me feel I am helping.

Some but not all charity shops will take reading glasses and long distance ones provided the lenses are not scratched. Some of my frames are horrendous looking now but were all the rage in their day. I am trying to find cases for each pair and then deposit the lot.

Miss Adventure, I am seriously jealous of your beautiful bedspread. My mum did a lot of fine lace crochet, but I have never mastered that. I did do a coloured blanket/throw, about 4 years ago now, which our youngest GS slept on when visiting. (Hopefully see picture)
I also love the many bargains I have got from Charity shops, too many to mention.

farview Sat 03-Nov-18 20:38:14
