Is punctuality “the politeness of princes” or as Evelyn Waugh said “the virtue of the bored”?
I have developed a bit of an obsession with being on time, (read “early”) because it is when I am running late that things tend to go wrong, and this might show you why.
I took three friends, all older and a bit wobbly on their feet to a film this afternoon. To take account of this (slow walking) , I allowed lots of time and said when I would pick them up.
The first couple were not ready, then went back for scarves as it was cold but never mind, still on track.
En route to the third I found the road completely closed (roadworks) about 200 yards short of her house, so undeterred I left the first couple in the car and walked to my friends house to find she was OK to get to the car on foot (fortunately) but of course the extra walk was perhaps not the easiest for her and a bit slow.
Off we went, obliged to take a bit of a detour but still not exactly running late but by the time we got to the theatre/cinema complex the rain was coming down, car park full, multi storey carpark also full so I dropped them leaving them to pick up the tickets while I drove round and round looking for any carpark that was not bursting at the seams.
Made it back to the cinema just in time but a bit damp as the rain had started in earnest.
Now I am not saying I would definitely have found a parking space more easily if I had been half an hour earlier but it was at the back of my mind that a wet Saturday, half term, a popular musical at the theatre plus the usual shoppers were just the conditions likely to have made it harder.
I used to arrive “on a Wing and a prayer” when I was young but is this perhaps an age thing (or common sense)?

What is our role as older people?

Craig and Lindsay Foreman end their hunger strike in prison in Iran.

.
, I’d never turn up 40 minutes early for a party and get in the way chatting brightly while my host’s still doing her last minute prep and hoping to grab a few minutes to get herself ready. Especially when constantly asking if there’s anything I can do to help. Yes, b....r off and come back at the right time.
