Loo in the night - help please!

Ive been making a trip to the loo in the night once for some time, but recently it has been twice. Do I have to just put up with this, or is there a remedy?

MawBroon Sun 11-Mar-18 07:40:02

Twice isn’t all that bad! I suppose it depends on your lifestyle - you don’t say how old you are or if you have been drinking more in the evening

Oopsadaisy12 Sun 11-Mar-18 07:47:08

Sometimes it can become a habit, if I need to go twice I try to get back to sleep first instead of getting up a second time right away.
It usually works, however, sometimes my glass of water is empty in the mornings, so I’m obviously drinking lots without realising it.

For me twice would be a good night, but as Maw said, if you are quite young and it concerns you, I would get advice.
I just see it as part of the aging process and accept it.

BlueBelle Sun 11-Mar-18 07:53:02

I usually get up about 4 am and but my very healthy friend with no bladder problems goes a few times each night
I wouldn’t worry unless there is pain or blood or discomfort

I'm another twice a night woman, wish I wasn't but there we are. Unless you have symptoms like those BlueBell identifies, don't worry about it. Tedious isn't it

netflixfan could be a man, in which case do you see this as a problem that may be related to the prostate ? If you are getting up to use the toilet but have difficulty urinating then seek advice.

OldMeg Sun 11-Mar-18 08:13:14

I think it’s fairly common as you age.

netflixfan Sun 11-Mar-18 08:13:48

MawBroon - I am 66, glass of wine maybe once a week, walk say 6 miles at the weekend.
Thanks everyone - always kind and informed advice from Gransnet, I love it.

GP check up in case of illness such as type 2 diabetes might put your mind at rest,

netflixfan Sun 11-Mar-18 08:17:33

I'm a woman, so t least its not a prostate problem smile.
I'm always hopeful of a herbal remedy for most things - like sage for hot flushes, mullein for lung problems.
Or in desperation a tablet from the GP.

OldMeg Sun 11-Mar-18 08:25:58

I’m not on any medication and want to stay that way as long as possible netflixfan. If your GP gives you the all clear why not just live with it.

However, one word of warning to anyone reading this thread. Be very careful when going to loo in the night. I know one person, a fitish and healthyish 90 year old, living alone and coping well. She walked to the shops every day and did all her own cooking. One night she got up in a hurry during the night, caught her food on something and fell and broke her leg. That was over a year ago and she’s still unable to walk. Her life has changed horribly, and all because of that fall.

So do be extra careful when you get up, half asleep.

I think its a bit soon to be considering medication netflixfan It is quite common as we age as OldMeg said good advice to have a diabetes check as well.
I have to pee at least twice during the night, at first I used to read when I woke but now I relax and go back to sleep if I can. Don't restrict fluids too much but avoid coffee last thing at night. I stick to water in the evening.

hildajenniJ Sun 11-Mar-18 09:40:02

I'm 66 and I'm usually up twice during the night too. I blame having too much to drink in the evening. A cup of tea after 7pm will do it every time.grin

Fennel Sun 11-Mar-18 09:42:24

Once , twice, even 3 times is ok. But when it gets to be more than that maybe tell the doctor about it.
I was having to go every 2 hours or so and it turned out to be due to one of my blood pressure tablets. Now changed to another type and problem gone.

If there is one thing I hate it is having to get up to wee in the night - but I bite the bullet and trail off to the loo. Seems to be normal at our age.

Nanabilly Sun 11-Mar-18 09:59:29

I'm up at least 3 or 4 times every night but that is normal for me and my health problems .
Any unusual activity concerning bowels or bladder should be investigated.
Do you have any other symptoms that have come on at same time as night time wee's.
If so I suggest a visit or chat to your gp

Charleygirl Sun 11-Mar-18 09:59:54

A good night for me is once but the average is 4 times. I am so used to it that rarely do I not fall asleep immediately afterwards.

Tegan2 Sun 11-Mar-18 12:32:26

Vaginal atrophy caused me to have waterworks problems, but that was throughout the day as well; a lot better now, but still get up several times a night to go to the loo. Find it very tiring.

glammanana Sun 11-Mar-18 13:11:44

netflixfan Try staying in the loo for a while after your have passed urine and gently rock back and forth this will bring any excess urine laying at the back of the bladder enabling you to feel "empty" longer I was told this by my Urology nurse and it does work.

Willow500 Sun 11-Mar-18 14:44:13

I usually get up at least once but twice isn't unheard of especially if I've had a lot to drink or having an unsettled night's sleep.

M0nica Sun 11-Mar-18 15:30:34

Par for the course really. I vary from sleeping through to occasional nights when I get up three times. I have an annual check with the nurse. BP, samples of wee and blood and would otherwise only worry if anything like this has other adverse symptoms.

Esspee Sun 11-Mar-18 15:48:57

Getting up at night gets to be a habit and the body seems to stop concentrating the urine as it should.
My solution when I get really tired from disturbed nights is to take an anti histamine for a couple of night running, the kind that makes you sleepy and you shouldn't drive. It gives me a great night's sleep (but doesn't work for everyone). A sleeping pill for two nights worked for a friend of mine.
A word of advice. If you are a man, or if your husband is having to get up through the night Please Please Please have a PSA test done to rule out prostate problems. If my husband had listened to his body he might still be with us.

watermeadow Sun 11-Mar-18 18:50:04

I go through phases of needing a wee in the night. The loo is downstairs and by the time I’ve gone down and back up I’m wide awake and can’t go back to sleep for hours.
At other times I’ll go weeks without needing to get up at night so I think it's largely habit.
If I had to get up 3 or 4 times I wouldn’t even bother going to bed.

NanKate Sun 11-Mar-18 19:10:25

Midnight and 3.00 am for me then wake at 6ish.
