Can anyone see the logic in this.....??

We have a kitchen full of extra food, nibbles, crisps, Christmas chocolates, fudge tree, choc coins, some mince pies, enough cheese and cold meats to open our own deli and today I fed bread sticks to the birds.

Why then did dh feel it necessary to buy 6 Mr Kipling iced Christmas slices because they were reduced to 50p?

MamaCaz Fri 05-Jan-18 17:42:24

He obviously can't resist a bargain grin

Can they be frozen?

NotTooOld Fri 05-Jan-18 17:54:46

grin Love it!

Alima Fri 05-Jan-18 18:03:44

Have to ask, is he Scottish? My DH is and he cannot resist a bargain!

Katek Fri 05-Jan-18 18:29:37

Oh yes alima.....he’s Glaswegian!
I wonder how much the birds will be able to eat - and the cats don’t mind the occasional chew on a Twiglet. Ooh, we have Burn’s Day lunch with Scottish grans coming up......perhaps I could take a few extras.......

Smithy Fri 05-Jan-18 18:33:15

Yes you can freeze them! A man after my own heart! Yesterday I bought a box of 6 mince pies cos they were down to 25p.

NfkDumpling Fri 05-Jan-18 19:09:29

My DH does the shopping. We have 48 toilet rolls in the spare bedroom (they were reduced to a silly price in B&Q), and stacked in the pantry six jars of coffee, enough cereal to last six months, several packets of cheese biscuits and other stuff stocked up on because it was reduced. I have enough Bold to last six months and Domestos to last four. He knows they’ll be reduced again, so why this compulsion to buy? And the shops are only 500 yards away! He has no Scottish blood.

My DH came across excellent kitchen rolls at 10p each in Asda and bought so many it took us 8 years to use them up. I used to have nightmares about our children having to dispose of them if we both popped our clogs!
I now buy one twin pack at a time!

Marydoll Fri 05-Jan-18 20:39:59

Katek, I can see the logic in it. I am the woman who has enough Christmas wrapping paper to last for the next ten years. At 25p a roll, I couldn't resist it.
PS. I was born in Glasgow grin

I hope you are feeling a bit better.

Alima Fri 05-Jan-18 20:43:11

Ha, ha, Katek, so’s mine!

Marydoll Fri 05-Jan-18 20:46:45

Could it be something in the water?

Greyduster Fri 05-Jan-18 21:00:49

I narrowly managed to stop DH buying two reduced
Christmas puddings today. We still have a reduced
Christmas pudding left over from last January which I doubt will get eaten now. He can’t resist anything that says “reduced” or “two for the price of....” I will probably bury it into garden and leave it for future generations to discover and marvel at the strange and remarkable things we ate!

annodomini Fri 05-Jan-18 21:55:00

I keep finding things which DS2 bought when he was here with the GSs just before Christmas. He is exactly the same type as the ones discussed on this thread. At one time, their utility room was packed to the ceiling with big boxes of detergent 'because they were on offer'. He gets his Scottish blood from me blush

Katek Fri 05-Jan-18 22:27:43

greyduster.... reduced Christmas puddings are one of DH’s particular favourites. He produces them at various points during the year with “Christmas”
scored out on the label and “Summer Solstice” or “Autumn Equinox Pudding” written on them in felt tip instead! We had (still have) 180 pouches of cat food wedged in the cupboard over the holidays as he’d found big boxes of 60 at a bargain price. Poor cats are looking at the packs with that “oh please no, not that again” expression.

Twobabes Sat 06-Jan-18 08:48:29

Greyduster, what a brilliant idea! That man is a genius and I’m stealing his idea. Please thank him!

Supergranbee Sat 06-Jan-18 09:03:02

Phew - thought it was just mine! He has 21 boxes of his favourite cereal because “you can’t always get it, & I always buy it when it’s reduced” about 15 jars of coffee, numerous loo rolls, washing powder, liquid soap etc etc all bought whenever reduced. I recently told him he was certifiable! ?

Barmeyoldbat Sat 06-Jan-18 10:03:41

It’s me who can’t resist the bargains. I buy toilet rolls in bulk and stock up on things we don’t always use. The coconut oil is one of them. NYR is not to do it but today I am off out to the shops and will probably come back with some bargains. That’s life.

Bathsheba Sat 06-Jan-18 10:26:55

My DH does this with coffee, breakfast cereal and toilet rolls, all of which have to be of a particular brand. Time was when I just bought a jar of coffee and he drank it, or picked up a variety of breakfast cereals and he picked one each morning, or wiped his bum with any old loo paper. But now, oh no, it HAS to be only this particular brand of coffee, or that specific brand of granola. And loo rolls can only be bought in Asda. And all these are consequently stockpiled when on offer.
I always recall my family laughing at an elderly relative who would only buy a particular brand of sausage and scorned every other brand - she unwittingly became a household joke which we still roll out today, many years after she departed this world!
Why does age do this to some people?

KatyK Sat 06-Jan-18 10:49:49

It's me who is the guilty party in this house. We have unopened chocolates, biscuits etc left. Yesterday I heard someone say that Asda were selling boxes of Heroes for 10p. I had to stop myself from trooping off to the nearest Asda and snapping them up blush I did resist the temptation though.

lemongrove Sat 06-Jan-18 10:55:32

An interesting post Bathsheba and I know somebody like this too (sat near me at the moment?) he has now decided that only certain items suit him ( after never caring before) so it must be an age thing.
My pet theory is that it gives them an element of control.
What do you think?

lemongrove Sat 06-Jan-18 10:58:19

I must say Katy I have no desire for chocs or mince pies at any price now that Christmas has gone, but if I see anything else reduced that I could use I would snap it up.
I don’t want whole rooms full of kitchen rolls though, and storage is an issue.

KatyK Sat 06-Jan-18 11:07:37

Yes lemon storage is an issue. This house is already full of 'stuff'

Christinefrance Sat 06-Jan-18 11:08:48

Oh lemon grove would that I had your will power. I can eat mince pies and choc at any time.( Except breakfast) smile

Teetime Sat 06-Jan-18 11:11:08

We'd starve if we waited for DH to buy food. Everytime I ask him what he would like for lunch/dinner he says' let's make do'. With what I cry!!!

RockNanny Sat 06-Jan-18 12:46:51

Loving this conversation, even though laughing is making me cough (damn flu!). You know, the birds would just LOVE those surplus Christmas puds wink!
