My parcel from another firm has leaflets about incontinence aids and Velcro slippers , I had ordered rather pretty T shirts in a vibrant coral colour

We think we are being bombarded with age related leaflets and literature. My 32 yr. old son received a letter from Age UK offering him car insurance! ?

On my 57th birthday I received my first Pre-Paid Funeral mailshot.

I keep getting mail shots for intensive medical screening, available at huge cost and glossy brochures from Retirement Villages Also at a W.I. Conference recently was given linen carrier bags by Nuffield Health and some funeral planning company. Obviously I must look like their 'target' audience. How depressing ☹️

The WI magazine always amuses me. On the cover there are busy active ( usually fairly young) women doing busy active things.
And it's full of leaflets for things like stair lifts, special insurance for the over60s and those reclining chairs that tip up .

Yes indeed. Special chairs that are easier to heave yourself out of, discreet hearing aids which recharge themselves and funeral plans.

On my friends sixtieth birthday she received one of those bowel testing kits in the post. She was disgusted as she thought they'd deliberately sent it on her birthday. I told her it was probably coincidence.

Oh goodness the WI magazine! Sooo much advertising stuff falls out of it I feel guilty about global warming and rain forests!! Love the 'discount' booklet we get from the WI too...stair lifts, funerals, retirement villages, equity release etc etc.

Just after my DH's 60th we received a glossy brochure from a local care home and a voucher for a free day there for the two of us, including three meals and presumably a bit of daytime TV. Sadly we'd to miss out on this cracking day out, as we wouldn't have been able to take time off work.

We received a brochure about mobility scooters. Fortunately we are both still pretty mobile. However, it did not go to waste as it was seized upon with cries of joy by 2yr old DGS, who loves cars, trains, diggers etc, and thought the pictures were just another variety of these.

A Swedish friend living here once asked, 'What are all these falling-out things?' , i.e. all the leaflets and brochures that fall out of the Sunday papers.

We always call them that now and I get a lot of 'falling out things' too - the National Trust mag is usually good for a few 'older' marketing shots.

Must say I find it a bit creepy, though, the way all these companies have you pigeonholed on their databases. I do try not to dish out any personal details on principle, unless I really have to, but they all seem to have fiendish Cunning Plans to find out about you anyway.

Oh yes ,,,,and e mails offering discounts for walking aids, hearing aids, incontinence wear, money back guarantee funeral plans ,,,,,complete with Star gazer lillies ! I don't watch daytime TV yet, but I bet its full of tempting things you would rather not be asked to buy !

I suppose the only good thing is, when the time comes we will know where to go and what to buy .....if we have any money left by then !

How old do I need to be to wear Woolovers without shame? I'm 67 and I wear EWolovers because the clothe fit me well, they are comfortable, they last well and often come in colours that suit me. Clearly I'm now 'elderly' as I learned from Gransnet when I started a thread on when you would be wise to identify as such, and I often find the drop-outs from magazines useful, since I'm disabled and my body is crumbling far faster than my brain, at least, that's how I perceive it! But yes, of course businesses track you - that's what market research is about, and the. Ompanies but and sell mailing lists, check the electoral register and etc, as well as buying data fro Google about our search patterns, to be sure they target us effectively. We're all on Gransnet, for instance - there's a big clue there! I'll get my Woolovers cardi ...

I changed my date of birth, just the year, on Facebook because I was getting fed up with adverts in the sidebar for chair lifts, incontinence pads, funeral plans etc. So I took 30 years off, and now I get tips on nail art, hair and fashion. Mostly too young for me, but much nicer to see than the other stuff

All I seem to get in my mail are leaflets for funeral plans, I suppose I should expect that as I will be 80 in July. But I will always remember that on the day of my husbands funeral I got 2 phone calls......one to ask if I wanted double glazing at a real bargain price, and the second from someone who was trying to get me to take out a funeral plan, and was determined that I should listen carefully to what he was saying. I said I was so sorry that I wasn't in the mood to talk about it as I had just got home from my husbands funeral. Stunned silence, then cut off. I can smile about it now because that was in 1986, but at the time I was so upset.

Never bought anything from Woolovers....are they any good?

I bought a grey hooded sweater from Woolovers once, a few years ago. I was a good bit larger then than I am now, about a size 20 I think. So anyway, this sweater turns up, nice quality, feels nice and soft. And then I try it on.... the sleeves were 8" too long - yes, EIGHT INCHES. I don't have short arms. Why do some manufacturers think that when people put on weight their arms get longer?
It was returned and tbh I've never felt confident ordering anything else from them since. But I still get inundated with brochures from them, which go straight in the bin.

Constantly being reminded we are living longer who can blame the enterprising business person from jumping on the band wagon.
