Last Tuesday my son was burgled. The house was ransacked and the DGs were very frightened when they all returned from shopping and discovered what had happened. I wrote about it in the thread 'Christmas Weep' Not one Gransnetter has responded to that. No" Sad to hear that" or "Hope everything is now O.K. " Bit disappointed really

That is really horrible and must have been hugely distressing for all the family, including you. I have tended not to look at the threads with Christmas in the title and have browsed only briefly in Gransnet for weeks. I am sure that other Gransnetters will be horrified and deeply sympathetic when/if they read this thread and have no doubt that the reason no one posted is that no one looked at your original thread – it being such a busy time of year. I do, indeed, hope that everything is O.K. now but suspect it will take some time for your son's family to feel secure and at ease again.

I'm so sorry you have been disappointed bbevan, I imagine the lack of response has made your distress about your family more intense. In my experience the majority of people here are kind and helpful and try not to add to pain and distress and do not deliberately ignore those needing support. Having said that your experience has been different and I am sorry for that, although I cannot explain it. For myself it was not a thread I visited regularly and so this is the first I have known of your family's situation. Burglary is undeniably distesssing for everyone. Having been on the receiving end I know the shock, fear and anger it can cause. Our response was to install an alarm system, horses and stable doors I know but I felt so much safer afterwards, as did the family. How are your family now? I hope the children have settled and it didn't totally spoil Christmas plans. How about you? Has your worry for them settled a bit? It's hard not to be able to protect our children, no matter how adult they are. Best wishes to you all.

BBbevan Fri 30-Dec-16 07:01:38

Thank you absent we are quite a distance from them so cannot give hands on help. But DiLs family are good and very supportive and live very near

Jane10 Fri 30-Dec-16 07:08:32

Very sorry to hear this. How distressing for the family. What scum these people are. They must have seen that it was a house prepared for Christmas and with young children in it.
We've been burgled too. Door smashed in and house trashed. Its not something you recover from quickly. The aftermath continues for ages as you suddenly remember things and rush to check if they're still there. In our case invariably they weren't. envy Some things can't be replaced.
I hope the children weren't too traumatised. A job for Gran there? Reassurance and cuddles galore? Best wishes to this unfortunate family.

Jane10 Fri 30-Dec-16 07:09:26

Wrong emoticon meant sad def not envy!

ffinnochio Fri 30-Dec-16 07:19:58

What an awful experience for your son and family. flowers for you all.

annsixty Fri 30-Dec-16 07:21:04

I too am sorry for the trauma your family went through and with your disappointment with us all.
I have not been as active on GN recently due to various things but that is no excuse for not being supportive and I hope you all feel better with time.

mumofmadboys Fri 30-Dec-16 07:39:05

Poor them. It must have been truly awful just before Christmas. I hope you all feel better soon.

ninathenana Fri 30-Dec-16 07:56:57

I have not looked at that thread, as I assumed it was all superficial problems "the turkey was dry" etc.
I too have been burgled, twice in fact, by the same scum bag. So I kmow how they are feeling. We were lucky as there was no damage except at point of entry. I sincerely hope they didn't have any sentimental items taken.
I'm so sorry for your family's upset. I hope the children recover from this quickly and that the family can have a better 2017.

Iam64 Fri 30-Dec-16 07:57:29

Horrible experience for your family BBevan. I hope you didn' take the lack of response to your post personally. I suspect Absent's comment above sums it up, I many of us have not spent as much time as usual on Gransnet, some avoiding threads about Christmas.
My father was a policeman and always said that the impact of burglary is under estimated. I hope your grandchildren and family are coming through this ok.

M0nica Fri 30-Dec-16 07:58:00

Been there - four times. It is a shock and disturbing the first time, but you get used to it.

The third time, the police had picked up a serial child abuser in our town the previous night. All of a sudden the loss of my jewellery seemed trivial. My children were safe. What else mattered?

Welshwife Fri 30-Dec-16 08:02:31

What an awful thing to happen - at any time of the year - let alone around Christmas. Like absent I skipped most of the Christmassy threads. Did this burglary take place before or just after Christmas - bit confusing looking at the dates.
My reason for skipping the threads was that we had a close friend who unexpectedly died a week before Christmas.

Maggiemaybe Fri 30-Dec-16 08:11:58

What a shame. I remember my youngest being very scared for a while after we were burgled and needing lots of reassurance and cuddles. We had three opportunistic break ins over a short period, but nothing (touch wood) since we installed a burglar alarm, and we make sure it's set when we're out.

I'm sorry you were upset that nobody replied to your post flowers I didn't see it, but it's not that GNers are uncaring - often we just feel sympathetic but move on. Sometimes we come to the thread days later when it seems the time to comment has passed. Unfortunately you can't see the quiet sympathy that your post will have generated! We could do with like/dislike buttons on Gransnet, as on Facebook.

J52 Fri 30-Dec-16 08:15:34

Sorry that this has happened, I hope your family are beginning to recover.

I too didn't see the post. flowers

shysal Fri 30-Dec-16 08:21:37

Sorry I didn't see your post BB, I too have ignored all the Christmas ones. You and your family have my sympathy, burglary is a devastating thing, not only materially but emotionally. Hope they manage to put it behind them soon.
(((Hugs))) especially for the children.

grannyqueenie Fri 30-Dec-16 08:34:39

What a horrible experience for your family. My grandchildren were unsettled and anxious earlier this year after they were burgled during the night. No damage at all and only my daughter's handbag and car were taken but very frightening to realise that someone had been in the house while they were all sound asleep. Hope your grandchildren soon feel reassured and safe, a nasty experience for any family to have.

Charleygirl Fri 30-Dec-16 08:46:35

I had replied to the Christmas weep post at the start but as it was upsetting me I did not return to it so I did not see your post.

My sympathies, it is truly awful. We were burgled many years ago and the scum returned about 3 weeks later after we had replaced TV etc. I have never bought any jewellery since because every piece that my mother had owned was taken and she had died a couple of years before.

It is not an experience that anybody forgets. It is the emotional rather than the material side that hurts. Honestly, we do care!

kittylester Fri 30-Dec-16 08:54:00

I'm sorry not to have responded supportively, bb. I've had flu and family so haven't been looking at all the threads.

That is an appalling thing to happen and I can imagine how traumatised the family must be. You must feel helpless being so far away. sad

f77ms Fri 30-Dec-16 08:57:53

I didn`t go onto that thread because of the title as thought it would be about losing loved ones and didn`t want to upset myself about my own losses . So sorry to hear about the burglary , it is a horrible experience for everyone concerned xxx

Christinefrance Fri 30-Dec-16 09:00:21

That's a horrible thing to happen to your family bb, there are some bad people around for sure. Do hope they can put it behind them with your help and have a better 2017.
Sorry to have missed your earlier post no excuses just busy as everyone said.

janeainsworth Fri 30-Dec-16 09:00:24

BBevan I'm sorry too about what happened to your family. It must have been a traumatic experience and I hope they are recovering.
I don't read all the threads on Gransnet and I didn't read the Christmas weep one.

glammanana Fri 30-Dec-16 09:11:00

Please accept apologies for not responding to your first post BBevan as with others I have just glanced at posts during the past month or so due to work and family commitments there is nothing worse than an intrusion into your household and I hope your family are getting over the trauma that these lowlife leave in their wake.flowers

Anya Fri 30-Dec-16 09:31:15

Another here who didn't read your post. Some thread titles don't draw me in.

I'm so sorry to read about it now. My in-laws were once burgled and I know how traumatised they were by the thought of someone in their house going through their things. It was the irreplaceable things like his treasured bowling trophy and her mothers rings that hurt most.

Has your son discovered how they gained entrance?

I'm especially sad that your GC were upset. We're any of there presents taken. I know how much anger you will feel towards those responsible for this,

Sending you reassuring (((hugs))) BB and hoping you're checking all doors and windows are security fastened yourself.

Anya Fri 30-Dec-16 09:32:12
