what are those black square thingys?

Oh don't get those, don't know what that would be. I'm sure someone will know.

Its usually when someone sends a emoticon that your phone or tablet doesn't recognise so fills the space with the square thingy. On GN the same thing happens if someone is posting from a phone and the symbols aren't recognised.

I think - and am probably wrong because I'm fairly new toall these things - that it is something, often an emoji, sent from a device which is more advanced technologically that the device receiving it. I'm guessing this because my old phone picks them up, my new one didn't. The Apple keyboards have a function for loads of emojis, so could be these. Assume other phone and tblet keyboards have their own version. Very prepared for the technologically intelligent to tell me I'm wrong.

I get empty black boxes on my PC, not filled-in ones!

does everybody see a black box on the blood thread or do some see an emoji.
I had a text message from a friend this morning with one black box at the end of the message.
Hers is a new phone.
So is it my phone not recognising the emoji?
I could not understand the meaning on the blood thread.

I see black boxes which I cant even click on, so no idea what they are.

Cherrytree if you mean in the opening message they are a mug of tea/coffee and a flower and at the end its a smiley emoji.
I would think it is your phone not recognising the emoji and or your computer if you are using a computer to post on GN.

On the blood op it ends with you do get ☕️ and ? (cup of tea and biscuit)

So would I be right in saying
If a posts contains a GN emoji then my blackberry phone recognises it and shows it as eg Smiley face or wine etc
However if the emoji is from the senders own emoji selection on their phone/ laptop/ Ipad then my Blackberry is not recognising it and I get a black square instead.

I can see the confused, tea and roast chicken, if that is what you mean by GN emojis.

You are all absolutely right about the technically advanced phone vs. the basic phone. I have a basic Samsung phone and he has an IPhone. Every time he added an emoji at the end of a message to me I would get a message of goobly gook words.

I see the GN emojis and yes I think that's correct . I'll send emojis from my phone to see if you are them????
