Advice please Commuting Aldershot/London

Much depends on budget and whether they're travelling by road or train.
I think a little more info is needed.

Both would be on trains, so was hoping for local knowledge of best town in that area for good transport links. I am no expert on Surrey/Hants. Budget is they will be renting, buying train tickets etc, so average income.

South West trains are the rail operator for that part of the world going into Waterloo ideal for the Bank lone.

Ascot would be good if you could afford it.
It is 30 minutes to Aldershot by train and under the hour to Waterloo.

I think forget about being half-way between Bank and Aldershot you need to concentrate on the best station options.

Woking station is a good bet - direct (non-stop) trains to Waterloo take about 30 minutes; and to Aldershot about 20 minutes.

Woking and the area around it is great, and the trains convenient, good suggestion river. We started out life in the UK in Brookwood, a tiny little place on the outskirts of Woking.

Look at the trains from Farnborough to Waterloo. That was a very fast line - about an hour to Waterloo and not anything like such high prices as fancy Ascot. If I remember rightly the Ascot line is a slow stopping line compared to Farnborough. The main problem there will be parking but maybe the person working in Aldershot could do the station run as I used to do from Camberley.
It may well be that it will be better and more financially sound for just one to do the commute because everywhere between those spots will be expensive and probably more so than the Aldershot area. Also look very carefully at the sort of season ticket you buy. The annual one seems a good buy but we found it much cheaper to buy monthly ones as you can adjust the dates to take into account holidays and days off and even just a weekend. You can usually add a couple of days onto a monthly ticket to take you to the Friday and you do not pay for the four weeks holiday most people take over the year.

Good suggestion ,Grannyknot. It is 7 minutes to Farnborough from Brookwood and 42 to Waterloo. It is a nice place and I am sure parking would-be easier than Woking.

As others have said Farnborough has a fast train up to London, one of my sons has a flat in Camberley and drives to the station car park at Farnborough, but is often staying with girlfriend nearer London so doesn't do it all the time. Camberley is not a great line for London I think a change at Bagshot is required and then there are a lot of stops up to Waterloo. You could consider Fleet, very near Aldershot also has a good train service into London I believe. Greenfinch has beaten me to it, but if I remember rightly Woking has a super fast train service up to town, maybe only stopping at Clapham Junction or so I'm told, but you would need to check it out.

Prettiest town down that way is Farnham attractive Georgian high street, slightly further out again has a 40 minute or so commute into Waterloo. Step daughter livs in a gorgeous small town Hartley Wintney and commutes up to London from nearby station Winchfield, takes less than an hour but her annual season ticket is well over £4,000

Hi Shazam, just seen your post so I appreciate you might already be sorted. Obviously depending on budget, I think clapham would be perfect for the young couple. Its a lovely area and very popular with young people. About a 40 minute direct train to Aldershot and the one going to bank would have about a 15 minute train journey into Waterloo and then would have to make their way over via cannon Street. Transport for London say the journey should take about 50 minutes. If that area is out of their price range I would also say Woking but then the one going to bank is going to have the longer commute.

Thank you granny ben. Nothing yet sorted as yet. Clapham is a brilliant idea, good rail link. Hadn't thought of that. Definitely one that needs investigating. Price of commuting versus rents.

I know, Suzied. One is currently renting in Angel, also v pricey. Just trying to help out so that they get the best start. Everything is expensive, rail fares, rents. Then there's finding a place where commute doesn't drive you mad. And have energy to work. So really am grateful for all local knowledge you have given. Cheers!
