I am wrestling with a bit of a problem and hope that some of you grans may be able to offer some helpful advice. My eldest niece, who is only seven years younger than me and to whom DD and I are very close, has been having tests for a health problem, and following a CT scan last Friday, she was given an appointment to come back and see the consultant. This appointment has now, apparently, been brought forward, and she is thinking the worst. I said to her that perhaps he'd just had a cancellation in his appointments list, but she said she's sure they would have told her if that was the case. She has been in a very fragile state for a couple of weeks and when I spoke to her today she was not coping well with this. Yesterday, when I went to see DD, who did not know about this health problem, she said that a relative of my son in law's, who is an old and close friend of my neice's, was very close to death. (My niece knew he had cancer, and that his prognosis wasn't good). DD said she would ring my niece and let her know, in case she wanted to get in touch with his family. I then felt I had to tell DD that perhaps the timing wasn't ideal, as I didn't know how she would deal with that on top of everything else. In fact, the poor man died today and now I really don't know whether we should tell my niece or not. Perhaps I have no right to make assumptions about how well she would deal with the news at the moment, and we should just go ahead and tell her, but frankly, I'm at a bit of a loss. I can't approach any of my neice's family as no-one in the family but her husband knows about her illness yet. What would you do? Sorry this is so long. I pray that the news she gets from the consultant is not all bad. She is my GS's honorary Nannan, and we all love her to bits! Any wise words out there?
